And why?
Orville is obviously a compilation of Original and Next Generation Trek. The choice of three different work environments with different personalities in regard to the captains and crew.
I prefer the Orville. The crew is fun and laid-back. I enjoy the realistic touches: gossip; movie night on the bridge; imperfect romances; practical jokes. And they have large comfortable quarters and work areas.
I think I'd be happy with either Picard or Mercer as captain rather than Kirk. (I've always preferred TNG to TOS.) One-on-one, I think Mercer would be less intimidating to talk to than Picard.
sharePicard's Enterprise; mainly due to the fact it has the most substantial firepower and shielding to thwart combat engagements when necessary. Space, in all its wonders, mysterious aurora, and anomalies, is a dangerous place, hostile to not only differences, but change. Also, Picard's vessel is outfitted like a brightly lit luxurious hotel, equipped to handle considerable civilian travel, and is not too terribly cramped like Kirk's Enterprise. You make an interesting point about the Orville; outside the crew, we have yet to really see the starship's interior in real detail.
