Today Fox officially announced their upcoming season, setting The Orville for a mid-season premiere. The first episode of the season is set to air on Sunday, December 30th following an NFL double-header. Seth MacFarlane’s homage to Star Trek: The Next Generation will then move to regular slot on Thursdays in 2019 for its second season. Fox confirmed with TrekMovie that the second season of The Orville will have a total of 14 episodes.

The Orville will be putting on a panel in Comic-Con’s third largest space, the Indigo Ballroom (Saturday at 4pm in the Hilton San Diego Bayfront). On the panel will be creator Seth McFarlane and others from the show including Star Trek alumnus and Orville executive producer Brannon Braga. We’re excited to see what is in store for the second season, which is well into production. The who is so clearly a love letter to Star Trek: The Next Generation, and we know of at least one Trek guest star for season two (Robert Picardo), but could there be more? Much like the Discovery panel, we expect to see a season 2 trailer or preview in addition to some news about what’s to come.

Sucks that we have to wait until December, but at least it is getting a second season.

Plenty of Star Trek cast, writers and directors in season 2.

Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Jonathan Frakes has been directing the latest episode of season two of The Orville. (He also directed one in the first season.) Yesterday his TNG co-star Marina Sirtis tweeted a picture of herself on set with Frakes and The Orville creator Seth MacFarlane. Frakes followed this up with the message “Cat’s out of the bag now.”

It was reported earlier this week by IMDB News that Star Trek: Enterprise star John Billingsley had a guest role in the first episode of The Orville’s second season, filmed earlier this year.

Earlier this week, Star Trek: Voyager’s Tim Russ revealed he had just wrapped up work on the show. And Russ’s Voyager co-star Robert Picardo did a guest spot in March, which was tweeted by executive producer/director John Cassar, pictured below with Picardo and MacFarlane.

Acclaimed Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Discovery writer Joe Menosky has joined the series as an executive producer and member of the writers’ room. And Star Trek: Voyager star Robert Duncan McNeill directed an episode of The Orville in April, his second for the series. Other Star Trek crossovers include director of photography Marvin Rush and writer/executive producer David A. Goodman, who joined in the first season.

Trailer for the new season look pretty much on point with what they did before. I like this show but I don't love it. It's a good pop culture thing for me, but I don't get much from the rewatch.

While there has been no official word about changes in the main cast, it has become apparent that Halston Sage’s Alara Kitan will not be present for the entire second season. She will definitely appear in the early episodes, including one titled “Home” featuring a visit to her home planet of Xeleya and the return of Star Trek: Voyager alumnus Robert Picardo playing her father.

The Orville is one of the shows in which Fox is embracing the idea of reducing commercial time. This means shorter commercial breaks, and a projected 5 minutes more content than the first season episodes.

Recently MacFarlane told Australia’s SBS:

It’s more of an anthology show so if we get it right, you won’t know what to expect. Also, there is more action as it continues because the early episodes were an experiment to get the response we wanted from the studio and they’ve given us more time and resources to film more complex scenes. We also brought in (24 producer) Jon Cassar, so there’s nobody better at doing action than that guy.
