what's in a name?

A lot of the names used in the show appear to be chosen with particular care. Anyone have any ideas or explanations for some of these, or others you have noticed.

Orville - not exactly a name that inspires excitement or grandeur or anything like that. Of course it's the given name of an aviation founder who deserves it, but in reality they would have used the name Wright. So it's kind of an ironic bad joke.

Yaphet - in Hebrew means "handsome", so more irony

Chris & Devon - the alias names they used aboard the Krill ship. Sounds like two masseurs?

Cupid's Dagger - but not the usual Cupid's Arrow. Does it mean this episode is a Cupid story on steroids? Even more pointed and sharp than usual?

Isaac - he's a sleek, ultra-modern robot, but is named after one of the earliest characters in the old Old Testament

Lamar and Malloy - each one is composed of a syllable starting with L and one starting with M. Are they kind of a twin package?

others?

Isaac is probably named after Isaac Asimov though.

reply

Aha, good thought, thanks.

Adding to the above list:

Derulio - inspired by singer Jason Derulo?

reply

I laugh every time someone on the ship says the name of the blue guy, "Darulio". It sounds like the name that a "Latin lover" would have. A combo of the names Don Juan and Valentino?

Bortus sounds like it comes from the name of Brutus. Strong, masculine and brutal. Perhaps that's why his singing The Titanic song would've been so funny.

This may be a reach. Dr. Claire Finn loosely based on Dr Carol Marcus. One of Claire's sons is named Marcus. Claire and Carol are close in sound.

reply

Interesting!

Yes, or if not Brutus, a Roman -us name in general.

I was also speculating that Marcus and Tyler may be common names for boys in African-American homes.

I kept thinking Yaphet was named after Yaphet Kotto, the engineer in Alien. Your idea seems better, since he's always trying to get with the doctor.

reply

Aha, never saw Alien. Makes a lot of sense since they're both engineers, though maybe an insult to whoever played the role in Alien? ;)

reply

Yaphet Kotto was the actor. For me, it's just who comes to mind.

reply

Oh I see, thought it was the character name. Still works though! Thanks.

reply

Not a character name as such, but I noticed in the last episode that Seleya is referenced as the home planet of Alara. Mt. Seleya was where Spock was reunited with his conscious in Star Trek III.

reply

Nice!

Judging by the closed captions, it may be Xeleya, but no matter. Pronunciation is the same.
