There was no father since she couldn't find a husband and decided to be a single parent. Probably artificial insemination or future equivalent. It does play into a stereotype though. It would've been better if she were widowed.

I'm on the fence re: the unruly kids. On the one hand, kids realistically tend to be bratty at times and their overachieving only parent was busy working and earning multiple degrees. On the other hand, one of those degrees is psychiatry so you'd think she'd be a better parent.

I think she happened to be black. Making the kids bratty because she's black, or trying to frame it that way as a viewer, would be bigoted.
