This is just so good

I rarely watch tv. In fact we don't even have Freeview, all we have is iplayer & amazon instant. And come Sept, we won't even have iplayer. I've never been much of a tv fan, I usually hear about shows after they air.

In pain and needing a distraction, I put this on 2 weeks ago. I saw "pervy" in the description, which almost put me off it. I'm in my 30's, never dated, never had casual sex, so all that is alien to me, and I just don't like watching sex scenes.

But I took a chance, and I loved it. So much that I watched the next episode the day it was available. I've watched ep. 3 tonight. This show is witty, awkward, kinda bleak but in a laugh-it-off-even-though-it's-still-sad way, and just hilarious. I am very tired and in pain so please pardon by lack of grammar.

I know this started as a play, and that may be why I love it so much, I'm all about theatre. Not Shakespeare and West End/Broadway musicals, but avant-garde and independent, small, intimate, alternative theatre. There's a lot of it in the States, haven't found it here yet. I guess it's all at the Fringe (I've so much to learn!)? What I meant to say, was that this still has that play 'feel', as a former stage actor I see so much in this. And it's working so well as a television series. It's just brilliant.

And again, this is coming from someone who hasn't had the experiences that are themes of this show. There's so many other things I can relate to though. I think everyone from their 20's through 40s should give this a chance.

I'll try and update this and be a bit more eloquent another day. I just want you to watch this. All of you. I've even re-watched the first 2 episodes which is something I've never done. It's that good. It just ends too soon! It feels like it's less than 10 minutes. And I just want more, more, more!

Once I swallowed a golf ball, and that must have altered my mind because...

Agree, some shows can really pull off the 4th wall well. I like how it varies from long monologues to short, barely perceptible glances. I have a feeling that I'm going to cry at some point as well.

I love her. I relate to her on so many levels. Is this what it is like to be single in London? Absolutely. It's like Sex and the City... do women think like this - yes they do. Her asides to camera are spot on. This is not going to draw a huge audience... it's niche, but those who love it will watch again and again, and spread the word!

It's too cerebral! We're trying to make a movie here, not a film!

reply

This will be like The Booth at the End where 98% of the discussion happens after the series ends.

I saw it and hated it. Not even remotely funny, disgusting people, no flow between scenes, random s**t that don't fit in like the sex scene in the beginning and masturbating to an Obama-speech. It's such a ridiculous show and not in a good way.
How can one like a show when the main character is such a pathetic and unlikable character? It's beyond me. And how others can see themselves in her... Yikes... She calls the guy pathetic for not wanting to go to her or his place after the first date and she stole money from him... The pathetic one really is her. Seems like she knows it herself, which makes it even more annoying to watch. Definitely won't follow this show. Too many good shows out there to waste time on this crap.

reply

That is why they make Miss Marple as well.

Indeed :) I love Miss Marple as well... But I'm captivated by this series. It seems so real inasmuch as how my tribe hides their pain... And how it manifests anyway. I want to see more of this and where it leads.

Watched Albert Nobbs after binging this series. Intrigued by thread of interconnected confusion of intent and gender/class/family longing.

Brilliant and brutally beautiful.

I'm afraid you're a moron

Stick to Mary Poppins and Little House On The Prairie then, you stuck up prude

This bit made me laugh so hard.

I'd agree that this is pretty good. Excellent cast including some of the cream of current UK comedy stars.

The last episode packs a dramatic punch and rounds things off nicely.

Only recently finished watching the whole six parts in a single binge viewing, we just could not leave it alone.

Utterly excellent. Superb writing, pacing, technique and, whilst the central character leads the way drawing the viewer somewhat unreliably into her world, the whole cast are a joy to watch.

I would be smugly happy to see more of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's writing and acting if this sort of quality and verve can be achieved again on another project. Yes, of course it could be commissioned again for a follow on series as there is a lot of scope with these characters and the joyously caustic humour would transfer to other scenarios... but hmm tricky?

*anacamille* - seeking 'alternative' theatre for new writing?

(in London at least) I would recommend regularly looking at what's on at The Royal Court, The Donmar Warehouse, The Menier Chocolate Factory (when not reviving Sondheim musicals!), The Old Vic, The Almeida, The Tricycle. There are many, many others including pub theatres such as the Kings Head or the Finborough.

Enjoy.

My God it's full of stars...

The show wasn't bad, but it suffers from the same issues that haunt a lot of other female-centric dramedies: the women just isn't believable enough as a lust object for men. Normal, intelligent men certainly don't fawn over someone so ugly looking and extremely unpleasant to be around. Sure, one night stands might happen occasionally, but nobody is going to take the kind of crap from her that she usually gives people. She's just not worth it.

Character pet peeves aside, I did have a good time watching it. There was some fairly sharp scripting in there. Although it isn't particularly original or innovative.

reply

I'd fawn over her. I think she's quite attractive and more importantly very funny. I wouldn't want her treating me like crap. But if I met her I'd be pretty into her. I'd have to get her to quit smoking though.

reply

You must be a hit with the ladies... 

I think she's very beautfiul

I also absolutely loved it. I'd never heard of it, saw a few minutes of the first episode by chance on late night BBC TV and was instantly hooked, just finished binge watching all the rest on iPlayer. I really hope there is a second series.
