Reason for and circumstances of his family's death are so absurd...

In the comics, it's simple and understandable. His family is murdered by mobsters because they were witnesses to a crime and this sets him on his vigilante path.

In Emo Punisher, his family is murdered in some elaborate plan because Frank was part of a secret unit whose officers were drug traffickers and they killed his entire family because killing him alone quietly would somehow cause more questions? From who? These same people then later sent a death squad to kill someone else in his unit who knew about the trafficking. I guess for some reason this wasn't going to raise questions with the same people they were afraid of? Why would they have waited so long to go after Gunner when he actually knew about what they feared Frank might find out about? And this is all because they were afraid Frank (Before he was The Punisher) would find out and get all pissed about the trafficking?

It's just so ludicrous when you think about it. They couldn't just keep to the basic story that makes sense, it had some big convoluted situation involving war crimes and CIA crap. I think Frank going after mobsters and criminals would be far more interesting.

Yep. I wanted to like this series but it is a complete mess.

reply

I agree. I liked some of this show but the origin they did was way too convoluted.

I enjoyed the season but i agree, they should have kept it simple. In DD season 2 they said it was cuz DA Reyes was setting up a sting to make a name for herself and Frank's family was in the crosshairs by accident. They did the same thing in Gotham. Bruce's parents were killed as part of a massive conspiracy.

I didn’t have a problem with this version. The drug trafficking / war crimes backstory allowed them to tie the DHS, CIA, and other governmental agencies into the mix; and the government is more powerful and intimidating than the mafia. The government plot also allowed them to introduce characters like Micro and Madini.

Basically, the whole story felt more high-stakes. It was better than just having them witness a mafia crime.

I Enjoyed the show but I disagree in the books his fam's death is not this complicated and its realistic. People are victims of crime out of random. Making it into some conspiracy was kind of a letdown,it should have focused a bit more on the war on crime

reply

well , I avoided all that by jumping in at series 2 and ,knowing the basic premise , fill in (make up) the details myself !

reply

Pretty smart. Maybe like they come to kill Frank but end up killing his family instead or something

reply

I agree. It's also the main fault in the Batman (1989) movie. It works better when the crime is just random so they don't have an easy target to focus on. Therefore all criminals become their enemies.

Convoluted it was. But giving this show another try I can now begin to get my head around it.

Even the mafia have rules eg. No killing a guys family. By having the secret gov agency wipe out Castle's family it kinda pushes it to a next level of brutality of Punisher's enemy.
