Ben correcting Julia's grammar

I though it was interesting when Julia described Ben as coming from an upper class, prep school background. I read his bio and it's true that he went to boarding school. Julia has a regional northern UK accent (Leeds?) and seems to hint that she comes from more humble, working class background. She went on to say that Ben acts condescendingly towards her by correcting her grammar and word mispronunciations. He doesn't seem to pick on the other crew members that way. Is there some clash of British classes going on between those two?

Julia is dim and shallow. If I was cooped up on a yacht for days on end, living with the people I work with and surrounded by cameras, I'd be correcting more than their Grammar.

Redart27,

Hey how's it going? We talked on here past seasons. Back again.

I thought that scene was weird last night in the kitchen. This is the first I ever noticed it. Ben has been on multiple seasons and I have never got the vibe that he was some wealthy, condescending douche. The scene in the kitchen where she said he corrected her grammar, I actually thought he was just asking which people were still asleep and that he wasn't correcting anything. I could be totally wrong, but that is how I took it.

It looks like this gets worse next episode. I wonder is this more Julia's insecurity and jealousy of Ben's background than Ben doing anything? Ben seems like a pretty nice guy. I guess we will see next week.

If I was on board I would yell at Hannah every time she said saloon. She might be technically correct but it sounds so stupid every time she says it. I am surprised the drunk people didn't say anything when she said it.

Hey McGurlea! Yes, I remember our threads on past seasons.

I like Ben too. He is the star of this show, imo. He's hilarious and the main reason I gave this spinoff a watch. He did correct Julia a few times, but she might be taking it all wrong. I don't think Ben is a snob but he is one of the most experienced crew members. At times he acts like a big brother to younger or less experienced crew. He took Danny under his wing to give him guidance and training (something Bryan is incapable of doing). He is probably trying to do the same with Julia. She is a very capable worker and, unlike Hannah, is one of the few who remains calm under pressure, knows when to hold her tongue, and keeps a happy face in front of guests. She could be Head Stew (that is Hannah's job, right?) one day if she got over her unsophisticated grammar fumbles. I think Ben had all good intentions, but it is interesting how Julia took it as condescending. It probably reflects her own insecurities.

This is exactly what I thought watching tonight's episode.

1st, God made idiots. That was for practice. Then he made school boards.

That was a somewhat weird exchange between those two . I like both Ben and Julia so I hope it doesn't get too much worse between them. It does seem like Julia is having a bit of a breakdown on the next episode - Ben too, for that matter.

Ben was definitely correcting Julia's grammar. I had to laugh because shortly before or after that moment Ben said "Me and XX", rather than "XX and I".

Good point! So much for his elite education.

I don't think he was correcting here. Because she said it one way (which was incorrect and apparently she knows it was) - does that mean he has to answer her the same way using incorrect grammar? Why wouldn't he answer her using what is typical for him. Julia didn't go out of her way to express herself in Benspeak.

I think she took it as a criticism/correction when it wasn't. I haven't seen Ben ever put on airs before. And I am not a complete Benophile.

reply

I believe he was correcting her. He was a bit subtle, but still, he was correcting her.

She mangled the word derogatory, btw she deserved it after she made comments about others being uneducated.

Words are pronounced very differently in the UK than in the US. And Julia was using colloquial grammar from her region of the UK when she said, “them two.” Where she comes from, Yorkshire, where Sean Bean is from, “them two” isn’t incorrect. Ben would have known that. He did correct her and it was a cheap shot.

She has a college degree and a masters degree ( in fashion). She’s not uneducated.
