Whatever Happened to Nikki Blonsky?

NBC’s Hairspray Live premieres tonight. I have to be honest I’m surprised they decided to remake Hairspray again (technically) considering the 2007 version is barely 10 years old but I guess they needed a version for the youngsters who don’t even know that John Travolta and Amanda Bynes exist.

Actually, is it me or have most of Hairspray 2007’s cast members careers cooled down A LOT since then? Not only have Amanda Bynes and John Travolta’s personal lives become more publicized than their actual film choices lately (though, in Amanda’s case, that’s because she’s no longer acting anymore) but Christopher Walken and Queen Latifah, who seemed to pop up all the time in theaters back in the 2000’s, seem to have to stuck to doing independent films for the most part and rarely pop up in something that goes to theaters nowadays. Then there’s the star of the movie, Nikki Blonsky. It seemed like she was the next big thing (no pun unintended) but she’s rarely acted since and, when she has, she’s stuck to independent films and TV work. She also started working in a salon. But why didn’t she become more famous?

There's just not a lot of opportunities for plus-sized women in Hollywood.

She worked in an ice cream parlor. She did a series on ABC family about a plus size girl in a summer camp. She also did some lifetime movies.

Marissa Jaret Winokur is looking good.

My wife and I were discussing last night what appears to be a Hairspray curse on the actresses who play Tracy. They get a wonderful immediate loving reaction from adoring fans for their role, but afterwards, most of them tank in their short-lived career.

The only one who seems to have broken this curse is Ricki Lake, and I can't help but wonder if it's becasue she lost all her weight after playing Tracy?

It's really a shame that for MOST plus-sized actors/actresses, they get passed over for movie/TV roles. I know there are certain exceptions, like when the weight itself is part of the story or character, or when it's needed for sick comedy ("Hey, Look at the fat-freak, Aren't they funny looking?").

I'm happy Ricki continued past hairspray, but I hope the other Tracy's are able to get past FAT-ROLES and become successful for their TALENT and not for their size.

Showbiz is cruel if a woman is FAT she will have a short career. It isn't fair BUT that is the way it is. If Nikki wanted a career she should of LOST THE WEIGHT.

She got in a fist fight at an airport with a former contestant of ANTM and became a PR liability.

The model who is black gave an interview on the Tyra Banks show. Nikki's father yelled racial slurs while he beat the model's mother to a pulp. The irony of it all.

She ate herself to death.
