The Hairspray movie did a good job of casting a variety of veteran actors and newcomers. As to who else could be in this cast, I'm not sure. Because my house frequently runs the Disney Channel, I'm more familiar with actors from that channel although it's probable that some of them are tied to Disney and wouldn't be able to do it. So these are my thoughts but I don't know if they would seriously be considered.
Amber? Dove Cameron (DC's Liv & Maddie); Peyton List (DC's Jessie and Bunk'd); Sarah Hyland (Modern Family); Sofia Carson (DC's Descendants and Adventures in Babysitting).
Penny? Sofia Carson; Peyton List.
Link? Nick Jonas; Joe Jonas; Ross Lynch (DC's Austin & Ally); Riker Lynch. Nick has the most live acting experience. He and Joe are probably good possibilities for Link. The Lynch brothers can sing and dance, but I'm not sure if they can pull off Link.

Wow, I didn't know Ariana was being considered for this. I hope they cast a great Seaweed for her to work with. Your suggestion of Jordan Fisher for Seaweed is a good one. The only thing is I personally don't want Ariana to come across too much like her Cat character from Victorious. There are perhaps some similarities but in my opinion I hope that she and the writers can create a Penny that is distinct from Cat.
My initial reaction is definitely not good, but I felt the same way about Vanessa Hudgens in Grease and thought she owned it in the end so fingers crossed!!

shareBizarrely, Broadway World deleted the article. I will say that if she is indeed playing Amber, this will be the first casting announcement of Hairspray that I will be disappointed in. She has not nearly as much star power or talent as the other celebrities cast thus far.

So it looks like she will not play Amber after all.
Then who could be Amber? Annaleigh Ashford was my first choice, but since she has a child due in September, she'll probably want some time off from acting. I also thought of Taylor Louderman since she was Wendy in Peter Pan Live as well as the fact that she previously played Amber at the Muny last summer.
shareNot sure tbh. There are many actress, both Hollywood and Broadway, that I could see playing Amber. I heard Dove Cameron's name being mentioned on BroadwayWorld boards but the last time someone did that it got turned into a false rumor obviously lol. Annaleigh Ashford would be a good Amber but that's likely not going to happen due to her pregnancy. Taylor Louderman would be a smart choice as well. She has ties to NBC live musicals too. I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Dove Cameron has joined the cast as Amber. So has Garrett Clayton as Link. I just went from being sort of excited about this to being "meh..."
A Disney Channel actor is the best the could do for Link? Really? Oh well. At least I'm excited about Martin Short, Jennifer Hudson, Kristin Chenoweth, Harvey Fierstein. And after doing research about Derek Hough former musical theatre career in London, I think he could possibly do really well as Corny.

shareSure is does. Disney Channel/Nickelodeon is known for it's mediocre actors with large pre-teen/teenage fanbases. Of course there are a few exceptions, but nothing I've seen from Garrett Clayton excites me besides the fact that he is good looking. Listening to a few of his songs on YouTube- he has an okayish voice and is a decent actor. Probably not up to the standard of talent a Link on Broadway would be, but I do understand this is a live TV event so you need people with big fanbases.
shareIf you think they're wrong because of talent why not just say that? Them cutting their teeth on one or two of the few kid oriented channels isn't the same argument, and it just sounds like bias tbh. They've also churned out some incredibly successful musicians/actors with genuine talent.

Can't believe I called Dove Cameron for Amber and she is now in the show! Plus Dove and Kristin Chenowith worked together earlier playing daughter Mal and mother Maleficent in the Disney TV movie Descendants. Now Garrett Clayton I didn't expect. He was okay in Disney's Teen Beach Movie, so I hope that he can pull off more attitude as Link.
Interesting that Rosie O'Donnell and Sean Hayes are going to be playing multiple roles. Will they change their appearance for each character? I personally think they should unless the producers want to make it more of an inside joke.

The official press releases announced Sean Hayes and Rosie O'Donnell as only Mr. Pinky and the Gym Teacher, respectively. Additionally, Craig Zadan tweeted this a few days ago:

Prudy has been cast and I'm guessing they are leaving out the Big Dollhouse so the matron isn't necessary.

I never caught Andrea Martin's earlier work on SCTV but was aware that she has done TV and stage work since then. She does seem to be a better match as Prudy to Ariana Grande's Penny than Rosie O'Donnell would have been. I look forward to seeing Andrea and Ariana work together.
