Harvey looked like a melting candle!

I absolutely HATED Harvey as Edna. For one thing, he's not fat enough, and for another, his voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Whoever thought of casting him (and yeah, I know, he won a Tony) for Hairspray ought to have their heads examined.

In Edna's first scene, she's walking around with pincurls in her hair, and I swear, she looked like a candle that was melting. All saggy-eyed and droopy. The joke about having a man play Edna is that Divine was a famous DRAG QUEEN, not just some actor they put in a fat suit. Plus, Divine played two parts in the film, not just one.

There's absolutely no reason to cast a man in that part. It's uncomfortable, especially when Edna's singing and dancing with her husband and they almost kiss. I thought Travolta was terrible, too.

Listen, you smelly stinkhole, Harvey's Edna has nothing to do with Divine, outside of being gay. Divine was a DRAG QUEEN, ok? He's already made a name for himself in such films as Pink Flamingos. And he regularly worked with John Waters, which is why he played Edna. Harvey is NOT a drag queen, you oozing kunt.

Take your fingers out of your cheesy bunghole for a few minutes and smell some fresh air. You definitely need it because I think your mental faculties are failing you.

One might almost get the impression that the character was NOT meant to be glamorous and attractive.....

reply

Really? Then you didn't see the original Hairspray. I suggest you watch it. Divine looked more like a woman than Harvey ever could, and his voice didn't sound like a rusty carburetor.

reply

Which has nothing to do with my comment. Even being marginally more attractive didn't make the character more glamorous...

Divine never looked like a woman. Part of his endearing nature

He looked more like a woman than Harvey, that's for danged sure. Plus, he played TWO parts in the original film.

Hello! Divine wasn't required to sing in Hairspray, so why are you even mentioning that aspect? He was required to be the mother and to SOUND like a woman when he spoke. And he did. He also played a male part and was very convincing in that. Why? Because Divine could change his voice. He didn't have the same gravely croak in every scene, like Harvey does.

There's absolutely no reason to cast a man as Edna, outside of a gimmick. And the only reason why they do is because the original Edna was a DRAG QUEEN. Not an actor who decides to dress as a woman for one role. Divine performed on stage in an act, made film (like Multiple Maniacs) for John Waters in DRAG, and was well-known for his outrageous get-ups as a drag performer.

Harvey is known as a playwright and sometimes actor. He's also gay. That's why he was cast, and he was just horrid.

Dove Cameron and Ariana Grande are FAR better singers than Brittany Snow and Amanda Bynes.
