Jennifer Hudson

Seriously stole the show with her vocals. I mean. That was incredible. I think I died a little.

Overall loved the entire show, enjoyed most of the casting choices as well. Martin Short dancing was absolutely adorable.

jennifer hudson...go Boomie!!! hasn't quite started here yet...sounds like the show will be really good!

reply

It was great! But seriously, nothing compares to the moment Jennifer comes on the screen and melts everyone's faces off. I searched it on Facebook just to see what everyone else was saying and that's all anyone is talking about. Jennifer for the win.

reply

I agree. Queen Latifah killed it in the movie and she had some pretty big shoes to fill, but she totally nailed it.

"Love isn't about finding the perfect person... it's about seeing an imperfect person...perfectly."

reply

Agreed. I love Queen Latifah, but Jennifer definitely came in and crushed it as well. I think she just shocked the country.

reply

But I still miss Ruth Brown, who originated the role in the first movie.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

reply

LOL, why would anyone be shocked? Have you not heard her sing before? It was wonderful, but I wasn't shocked. Everyone knows she can sing like that.

reply

By far the best part of the show.

reply

I LOVE her!!! I picked her to be a star when she was on American Idol!!! She's come so far!!!! She's a true star. ??

reply

Vocals yes. Image NO. Having a thin woman song Big Blonde and Beautiful did not work for me, and it sends a terrible message to young women.

reply

You have a valid point, jen_78. Ruth Brown (1988) and Queen Latifah (2007) were both bigger women for the same part. Of the three, Jennifer did have the best vocals.

reply

I do agree about the vocals. I knew they would be stunning coming from her.

reply

Keep in mind guys, for YEARS Jennifer was fat-shamed because she was heavy. She is an example of someone who came to love herself and her body and has always promoted healthy body-image. Currently, she may be considered too thin in the role but her journey still rings true to the material.

reply

It just made me so uncomfortable to hear the powerful words of that song come from a thin woman. I admire and respect her journey. But John Waters wrote the parts that he did SPECIFICALLY so that that large women could have leading roles. It would be the same as casting a thin Tracy or a thin Edna. It just doesn't work.

I LOVE Hudson. I really do. But this broke my heart a little.

reply

"but her journey still rings true to the material."

And? My life's journey included a period off unemployment where I would have gladly sold my own hair to pay rent...doesn't change the fact that I'm a 200+ lb man and would have no business playing Fantine in a production of Les Mis...

reply

I couldn't agree more! Jennifer Hudson is an incredibly talented performer, but completely wrong for the part of Motormouth Maybelle! Maybelle is meant to be the perfect confluence of Hairspray's two themes: the struggle for civil rights and fat acceptance. She's a woman who's been told by both law and society that she ought to feel less than because she's black and because she's fat. And Maybelle, despite all of that, loves herself. She loves the parts of herself that she's been told all her life she shouldn't, her blackness and her size. Big, Blonde, and Beautiful is meant to be an anthem that speaks to those two themes. Because of that it's one of my favorite numbers in the show, but I couldn't bare to watch it last night. I had to leave the room because I knew it would make me too angry. NBC's decision to cast a skinny woman as Maybelle was a travesty. It also made no sense. How can you have a skinny actress sing about loving her fat self? Just take a look at these lyrics:

I offer big love with no apology
How can I deny the world the most of me?
I am not afraid to throw my weight around
Pound by pound by pound

Because I'm big, blond and beautiful
There is nothin' 'bout me that's unsuitable
No one wants a meal that only offers the least
When girl we're servin' up the whole damn feast

So yes, while Jennifer Hudson is talented, she was completely wrong for the part.

reply

Thank you. I've had a lot of friends chastise me for feeling this way... even so far as to tell me that she's not skinny! I'm glad someone else understands.

I was actually in the show once, and they cast a thin Tracy and padded her. It infuriated me. John Waters has even said that the reason he gave the rights of Hairspray to be turned into a musical was because someday when the rights become open to high schools, the chubby girls and the drag queens can finally have the leading roles.

reply

I disagree with the hate Jennifer Hudson is getting some of us are TIRED of the big fat black woman stereotype. Hudson was FAT in real life YET lost the weight and got healthy. Glad Jennifer did not gain weight for this role or wear a fat suit. She is an incredible singer. So So TIRED of the fat black woman stereotype. It was nice to see a thin and beautiful black woman in the ROLE!

reply

Stevenmorrisseyx, no one is "hating" on Jennifer, SMH. And, obviously, you miss the entire point of not only what is said, but also the movie and the musical as well. The character Motormouth Maybelle is a FAT WOMAN, understand? So casting a thin woman in the role is bad casting. What is so hard to grasp about that? And what part of that is "hating" on someone?

reply

Exactly! It's not hating on Jennifer Hudson to say she was poorly cast. She didn't cast the musical so it certainly isn't her fault. It wouldn't be appropriate to cast her as, I don't know, Miss Saigon either. Not because she isn't a talented singer, but because she isn't Asian. It's the same with Maybelle, I'm sure Jennifer sounded great on I Know Where I've Been (I'm going to have to guess because I couldn't bear to watch her scenes in Hairspray Live), but Maybelle is a fat, black woman and Jennifer Hudson isn't fat. This is not a situation where, traditionally, the women cast as Maybelle have been fat and fans are upset at NBC bucking tradition. No, Maybelle is written as fat, she sings an entire song about it for goodness sake! So yes, it's upsetting to see a skinny woman cast to play a fat part. Lord knows, there aren't exactly lots of parts out there for fat actresses as it is.

reply

You'd have to cut "Big, Blonde, & Beautiful" and all of Maybelle's other lines pertaining to her size in order to have her NOT be a fat black woman. -.- Hudson's got a great voice, but that isn't enough, and her being cast in this role (without a fat-suit, even) is baffling.

reply

Good point. "THAT'S a big woman?" NO! She's not even plump/chubby! Didn't work for me either. Maybelle's body type is written into her character; you don't get to change it. It's not a role in which you can cast dramatically different-looking actors and be fine. She doesn't sing about how once upon a time she USED to be large. It was like having a white Seaweed or a full-figured Velma or a black Link--just so, "Why?"

reply

This. Great voice, but totally miscast in this role.

reply

Yes, she was terrific. She help to keep me watching, as I thought the show was a bit too long. 3 hours? 2-1/2 hours would have been perfect. Still a great job by the cast. The Wiz and now this. Keep it going.

"Hairspray Live!" was wonderful, and the single best thing about it was Jennifer Hudson. Please, God, give this woman more great roles.

She overdid it...as usual
