What did Jack/Ellie mean when he said, "She can't lose them both?"

Towards the end of the movie Jack/Ellie is looking at pics from when Ellie and Sassy were kids and then recent pics of Sassy and Aspen. He then says, "She can't lose them both." I thought at first maybe he mean all three of them, Elli, Sassy, and Aspen were all best friends, and she lost Aspen, but kept Sassy, and now is now on the verge of losing Sassy too, but then I remembered that Aspen is "the new girl," so there's no way all 3 of them could have all been best friends.

I think he meant Sassy and Ellie's dad. But I don't know that that really makes sense because wasn't that after the party when he told Sassy off? And her dad didn't show up to the competition. So yeah, I think that's what he meant but I don't know that if makes much sense.

Yeah that makes sense. Wish the writers would have made it more obvious to what they meant when the character says something that seems very important to the plot. Yes he told her off before that, but that's why he felt bad ... cuz he had realized what he's done. Note that was also close to the scene where Ellie/Jack realized what she's done to mess up Jack's life too. They both realized their mistake at pretty much the same time.

When Jack is looking at the old pictures of young Sassy/young Ellie with her Dad he realizes that Ellie has suffered so much with her Dad leaving that she can't go through another person abandoning her (in this case Sassy). That is what he means by saying "she can't lose them both" her Dad and her friend Sassy.
