The ending...

I wasn't sure how they got into Disneyworld. Was this a fantasy? Did they die? I just didn't get it.

I also had that feeling, that it was them imagining. I was thinking maybe she comforted her but pretty sure soon after she would be found.

reply

I didn't understand either. And why did it all of a sudden cut to completely different quality on that shot? It's like they were trying to go for some home movie effect.

reply

The quality difference was because they were stealing the shot. They didn't have permission to shoot on Disney property they got the shot the only way they could.

Here's an article for you:

Thanks for sharing that article, it helped me understand the film a lot better.

reply

No problem! Glad you got something out of it.

Sean Baker seems to be an interesting director with a unique vision and style.

It was Disneyworld - but that's beside the point. Yeah, I don't know, there's no way they can run that far - even from Kissimmee. And you have to take the monorail to get to the front gates. And you sure as hell can't run through the front gates. Probably something metaphorical I missed I guess - hence the dreamy framerate. Great movie, though.

I was thinking maybe they were in paradise, the afterlife or something. That world (disney) was the outside world for them - as their lives were the outside world for all the tourists. I kinda liked this perspective the movie intended to show. Step outside and you'll see the horror. Like riding from the resorts to the airport in the carribean countries.

They ran for their lives and somehow ended up in their heaven (much like the old lady in Titanic). It is possible that they both got hit by a car or a truck on the road. There was no way they could've run that far to Disneyworld in a few minutes. So I thought maybe they were in their paradise, the heaven we all go when we depart. :)

That's the only interpretation that prevented me from thinking that the ending sucked... hahaha.

Cheers :)

Interesting, but depressing explanation of the ending.

Having just watched this the first time, I must admit I was expecting them to get hit by a vehicle. I like your point about the outside world, which was also illustrated by the tourist tour helicopters flying all the time (you can see a sign saying $15 a tour when Moonee runs at the end)

reply

That's absolutely it. The simplicity of that movie made me think of some unseen layers of society we live in. I really liked the movie and the way it was left to interpretation.

I never noticed that sign saying $15 a tour. I'll try and watch it again!

Cheers! Happy New Year! :)

reply

Thanks, happy new year to you too!

I really tried to appreciate this movie, but something simply didn't work for me. :/

reply

I found it very realistic. I guess that doesn't work for some.

reply

I wish it had ended with them all getting sprayed with a giant can of Raid.

reply

I think it was meant to be real, but they took some poetic license to make it look easy. Part of the message of the film was the similarities between haves and have-nots, and the end, to me, was an illustration of how the world "should" be... just run past the gates and enjoy the rides like the people who paid for it. We can all be "haves."

Dunno maybe I'm being too pessimistic.

reply

I have no clue, but I really don't care, because this was a disgusting, crappy movie about a lowlife, scumbag prostitute.
