RIP: Air Vice-Marshal Peter Latham dies at 91

Air Vice-Marshal Peter Latham, leader of the Black Arrows

Air Vice-Marshal Peter Latham, who has died aged 91, flew fighter aircraft throughout the Cold War and was the leader of the Black Arrows formation aerobatic team, one of the predecessors of today’s RAF Red Arrows.

No 111 Squadron, always known as “Treble One”, had formed an aerobatic team under the leadership of Squadron Leader Roger Topp. Flying all-black Hunter aircraft, and supplemented by aircraft from other squadrons, they had grabbed the headlines when they performed a 22-aircraft formation loop at the Farnborough Air Show of 1958; the first time such a manoeuvre had been flown.

Latham assumed command of Treble One in October 1958, a few weeks after the Farnborough event. Having flown in other formation teams during his earlier career as a fighter pilot, he brought with him the same enthusiasm for formation aerobatics as his predecessor.
