Animation: on a different level

Did anyone else think that the animation or rendering of this short was just so much better than anything else Pixar has done?

The level of detail I thought was just a different class: the grains of sand, the foam of the waves, the feathers of the birds, it all looked so good. Do you suspect that Pixar have a new enhanced animation technique/style that they are trialing here?

The animation in Finding Dory was good, but compared to Piper it was more like an old style hand drawn cartoon.

I take it you didn't watch The Good Dinosaur? The characters themselves are very stylised but the backgrounds are much more realistic than anything Pixar have done before.

This is a short as well though, it's a lot easier to do something this realistic for 10 minutes than a full film.

Pixar use these shorts for pushing the technology. Blue Umbrella seemed equally realistic.
