It Only Took One Episode.

I watched the Deflate Gate and ejector seat ep. Terrible. I hate fake competition shows to begin with, but this one really sucked.
And Inflate Gate was about as unscientific as you can get. A bunch of pansy nerds catching footballs. For the untrained, would a few pounds really make any difference? And they didn't test THROWING the ball. Wouldn't a slightly soft ball be easier and more accurate to through? To be accuratly tested, I would think they would need at least college level athletes that really KNOW how to catch.

If the producers really wanted to cut costs, why didn't they just retire Adam and Jamie, and move the build team to headliners? A&J were ready to leave, but I'm sure the build team would have stuck around.

They used a sample size of however many competitors to note the difference in catching a regulation ball to catching an under-inflated ball. A college level receiver probably would have caught all the passes, so having people who don't catch footballs regularly gives more of a chance for differing results between the two inflation levels.

Kyle also explained that they were not only testing the myth of catching the ball, but for this individual challenge, they were observing the showmanship and performance to test how each contestant would function as the host of their own MythBusters show.

The show did conduct a test on throwing the ball with the coach earlier in the day before he met the contestants. This is what you previously indicated would be a better way to test - with an experienced person. This is no different than Jamie and Adam bringing in an expert to test certain myths above their skill level.

Your two complaints are conflicting with each other and ignore some of the reasoning given within the episode itself.
