about the myth, testing, and results

I think it's embarrassingly bad. to take this week's gun myth as an example,

1- myth is not explained properly/understood by the producers of the show. The hero in movies, usually escapes by turning the lights off. that's not the myth examined in the episode.

2- what they wanted to test for is not tested properly.
2.1- usually turning off the lights means close quarters, which means very close range.
2.2- the hero is usually human sized and not a small floating target in the air.
2.3- shooting guns at night produces flashes can help follow up shots to connect.
2.4- humans don't make these noises while walking or accidentally knocking down objects. It's easier to track some sounds compared to others.

3- they actually hit human sized target in the test

4- Mythbuster has the habit of calling the myth busted if the average/below average Joe can't do the myth. that's laughable. if they had tested these contestants shooting guns at an 80 yard target, they would have busted the myth of guns shooting targets. if they had these contestants do a large distance marathon or swim without proper and extended training, they would have busted the myth of walking, running, and swimming.

anyone agrees? if you don't agree, be specific.

reply

I think this is more for testing the busters, not busting myths.

I mean, why re bust myths that have already been busted? Needled in a hay stack did not need a re visit. They did it to see how they tackled it.

reply

I couldn't agree more.

The other thing that irked me about the gun myth was the guard they had their arms in. It made every single shooter aim low. If they had free range of motion they would have been able to correct their shots and instead they shot nearly round toward the ground.

The small sample size coupled with their overall lack of how to use a gun ruined this "myth".

Some of the myths are way too oddly specific. The bike myth of not being able to ride a reverse gear bike without practice...who the hell would think that's possible anyway? Most people cannot ride a normal bike without practice, so I don't really understand the point of this being a myth.

The targets were more than big enough.

Gun flash means nothing because it happens AFTER you pull the trigger.

It was supposed to test if noise helped you hit the target. They all shot in the correct direction. They just pointed the gun too low...probably because being blind folded messes up your sense direction.

not human sized. the myth is about humans. the targets were small.

bodyguards in movies carry guns with more than one bullet. they also fire more than one bullet in most movies.

I think what revsader said about the guard/safety contraption made them aim low, and bodyguards have enough muscle memory to shoot straight/level.

reply

The targets not being human sized doesn't matter. They're clearly big enough to hit.

Even if you fire multiple times gun flash was not part of the test. It was about not having vision.

The safety guard was not the problem. They were pointing the guns down with thier arms/hands. Nothing was keeping them from adjusting up. It only guided them to face away from the crew. Look at it again before it gets removed.

I don't agree with what you said on the three points, but you are entitled to your opinion of course.

P.S.: I did find your answers strange enough that I had to check you post history to check if you are trolling. I think it comes from blind passion to see a good show, and there is nothing wrong with that. I don't think these producers and blond host are doing their job with the same amount of passion.

reply

Uh what? That's kinda funny. Ya I don't troll.

What blind passion? The show is ok. I don't like the elimination process because there is not one. Which I mentioned in another topic. I just watch it out of curiosity to see what becomes of it since Adam and Jamie left.

Anyway. I don't really know what your problem is with this particular segment. The safety guard is not preventing them from pointing the gun higher with their hands and wrists.

My problem with this segment is they criticized Tracy for not following directions but they really just decided to nitpick since nobody hit the targets.

I think the whole show has the same level of planning, thought, and execution as the elimination process, which isn't much at all. In the original show, I think a lot more effort was put into most(not all) of the myths. At least the Adam and Jamie segments.

In this show, the producers are not planning as needed, then forcing arbitrary rules, tool, materials on the teams. the second myth segments are even less organized, and planned out.

In the last episode's second myth, they tested something real with a commercially available bike, and said "it's impossible to do X", only to retcon it into "it takes weeks to do this", then retcon it to "it's impossible to do this without training", showing the myth-busters failing at the test, and the professional person doing the myth with little effort.

they asked the myth busters to test a myth without any training, and concluded whatever result they wanted, then eliminated/didn't eliminate someone randomly.

reply

I thought having them build their own bikes was pointless. This test was also on Brain Games. Some people tried it out - failed - and a guy who had trained showed it being done. I think they're just filling time. Same with breaking out of hand-cuffs.

I thought drunk/creativity was interesting. I've never heard of that before. They should really save these for afterwards when this is over (assuming they do bring the normal show back with the winners).

I don't know what the process should be. There's too many variables to determine who's good enough since a lot of myths are different and require a team effort. The elimination process is the only thing that really bothers me.

The original was consistently an 8 with some 7s & some 9s ..........this would be a stretch to be a 5 .........

The gun myth was horribly done. They should have simulated the exact scenario and substituted the gun for a paintball gun but modified it to have a muzzle flash effect.

Also the whole gun simulation was stupid anyway as the myth talked about a trained guard or policeman doing the shooting while the thief tries to get away. But they substituted a trained shooter with untrained.

Ultimately on both cases, they didn't prove anything... which really makes me frustrated for watching the show.
