The twist

I would actually be impressed if this were 1998.

reply

Yeah, the twist was stupid and the movie seems to not understand the specifics of mental illness at all but as a film on motherhood, it works.

Have a short review of this one here if anyone is interested-https://youtu.be/Msvy9qNuPo0

reply

Yes, it was an odd twist but I liked the movie.

reply

Why, the whole movie was nonsense, a trick. I hate movies like that.

reply

I can see what you mean. I guess it's not fair for the audience but sometimes, maybe, can a movie just give you a glimpse into someone's experience and not have to be a traditional story? It's a cheat though, you're correct on that.

I think that is true ... sometimes. Definitely not the case here. To do that you have to let people know what they are watching so they can put it in context and understand it. Could be because I am a man that I did not get it, but I didn't feel this movie was anything but a shallow attempt to pander to women.

My girlfriend is a nanny and she is really great at it, so I thought I would take her to this movie. We both did not like it. Honestly we were kind of angry that the movie was so confusing, and deliberately so.

I liked that the movie showed all the really hard things about motherhood and aging. It was very authentic. I don't see it done so honestly very often.

reply

> It was very authentic.

I agree with that .... for the first third of the movie.
Then they ruined it! :-(

reply

It was terrible. I was loving the movie so much, and then it took a nosedive. Really disappointing!

reply

I agree, I don't see many movies, but I thought this would be great, but it was false advertising, and it was terrible.

reply

I liked the twist.

It transformed the movie from being about an annoying Manic Pixie Dream Girl who loosens up a middle-aged mom (an overused and forgettable comedic formula) to being about a woman who must say good-bye to an earlier period in her life and fully embrace where she is now.

Way more interesting and relatable.

reply

I also liked it, and wasn't expecting it at all.

reply

Did she embrace it though? She is nonchalanty making lunch at the end, it doesn't seem like she has a better outlook on her daily chores as a result of the car crash experience.

reply

I got the impression from her little goodbye scene with Tully in the hospital room that she was saying goodbye to her old self. I don't think she has to necessarily like her chores, but she no longer seems like she can't handle the stresses of daily life.

reply

Absolutely. Really great way of putting it ^. I thought it was a terrific take on the pressures of motherhood and a barnstorming performance from Charlize Theron.

Loved it. Loved the twist. Up until then, it was a Lifetime dramedy. Nothing wrong with it, just not my thing. The twist saved it for me.

reply

I knew something was off from the bedroom scene onward, but I didn't quess the twist.
It is good solid movie! I was impressed.

reply

I loved the twist and thought they pulled it off really well.
