The book describes how Iorek fatally wounded Iofur by whacking his lower jaw off his head, just when it looked like the latter had won. The moment was described so vividly, and the Golden Compass movie showed it so brilliantly...
...but not this adaptation. In fact, it's not even clear who the winner was, at first. It was really disappointing.
I’m disappointed too that the killing blow wasn’t shown but even in “The Golden Compass” it wasn’t that bloody. If I remember correctly Iorek slashed his throat, not ripped off his lower jaw.
shareThe showdown was a travesty in this adaptation whereas in the books it was done beautifully. In the books Iorek came charging into Svalbard and Lyra went out to meet him and tell him what she'd done. Then Iorek and Iofur fought, in armour, out in the open in front of all the bears. Lyra was fearful that Iofur would kill Iorek but Iorek was equal to the task. He outsmarted Iofur and killed him even though Iofur was the larger bear and unlike Iorek was rested. Iorek was a true King.
But in this tv show yet again because of budget constraints the fight was shown on a small scale, indoors with only maybe a dozen bears in attendance. Iorek and Iofur wore no armour and the fight was over quickly and in the critical moment we were looking for some bizarre reason at a close up of Lyra's face.
But the worst thing was that Iorek was shown as having been beaten by Iofur. He was down and out and Lyra ran to comfort him. It was only when Iofur physically threatened Lyra that Iorek found the strength for one last effort. This robbed Iorek of all his power and dignity. He was weak and needed the stimulus provided by his love of Lyra to win. Once again the female as the font of all virtue and good endeavour wins out. It is yet another example of the use of this production as a propaganda tool for the "woke" agenda.

This, together with one Witch at Bolvangar and a black Will Parry, could kill off this adaptation of the series for me. I think I'm starting to agree with you, Quasimodo. I will, however, wait to see how The Subtle Knife is adapted, and see if they screw up the Malefa and the Gallivespians as well, before I make my final judgment.

BBC don't do gore. They are too family friendly for that sort of stuff now hence why their big films over Christmas are always family animations. There was a time when they were more open to it with their output. Now they treat everyone like snowflakes who might be outraged to see a bit blood.
