Is Mrs. Coulter From Our World?

I've never read the books so I don't know. Most likely not, but maybe her being from here & then getting a daemon in their world might explain why the golden monkey seems to be unique in that it can travel some distance apart from her unlike most daemons.

reply

No, she's not. The separation of human and Daemon is due to "intercision", which can be devastating for both if not done properly. You should really read the books, I don't want to say any more.

reply

No. Mrs. Coulter is from Lyra's world, but she is aware that there are other worlds out there. Frankly, I think she is an evil, conniving, but complicated woman. Her only good point was when she rescued Lyra from the soul guillotine.

reply

Ruth Wilson's Mrs Coulter seems to have a tendency to be dominated by her emotions. And at times even displays a hint of being somewhat unstable. It seems to me to be an odd characterisation given that she is supposed to be a very powerful woman.

reply

You’re both right & Quasi you’re spot on in your observations. Trust me I got the same vibe too, I think we all did. That Mrs. Coulter is seriously damaged & a bit unhinged.

Ruth Wilson is doing a great job in bringing that out. She’s obviously one very tortured woman.

reply

Yes it's obvious that she is something of a head case but my point is how could such a flaky person rise to a powerful position in the Magisterium ?

reply

If you live in the US, you ask yourself that question every single day.

I can't remember if Mrs. Coulter was a little unbalanced in the books or not. Getting tipsy and walking along the ledge, nearly falling off, it's almost like she had a death wish. Perhaps the procedure that partially decoupled her from her daemon is having unwanted side effects. Or maybe she was always like that. Functional drug addicts and other emotionally volatile people often do occupy positions of responsibility. If she's uniquely talented, has connections, or possesses special knowledge that would give her clout within the Magisterium. They'd be inclined to put up with eccentric, even normally out of bounds behavior - up to a point. There are limits in all things.

reply

No in the books she was a criminal mastermind. Cold, calculating, ruthless and very intelligent. No nutty behaviour at all. The only weakness she had was for Lyra her daughter.

reply

Been a long time since I read those books. But yeah, I remember that she still loved her daughter even though Lyra rejected her.

reply

Are you certain of that? Ep 1.2 had 2 anomalies with Coulter and her daemon: (1) the unnatural distance they could be apart, and (2) when Coulter smacked her daemon for being witnessed too far from her, Coulter did not share the daemon’s pain. She may be of that world, but has she been altered, and her REAL daemon removed, replaced by a daemon sheared from another person, posing as her own? That would explain both anomalies.

reply

I read the book. That, and hitting your own daemon doesn't hurt you. It's when someone uses their own daemon to torture yours, that's when you feel the pain. And no, once your daemon is severed, you're little more than a zombie with a zombie animal following you around, neither of you speaking to one another. Wouldn't matter if someone tried replacing the daemon, it wouldn't work.

I did find it odd that Mrs. Couter's golden monkey daemon didn't talk at all, either in the book, or in the movie, but that might be that she trained him to be her spy and not talk to anyone but her. Unfortunately, he's not the best of spies, to be honest. He stands out too easily.

reply

Yes from our world, but in the past. She is really Jane Eyre a governess on the run from Thornfield and the priapic Mr Rochester. She knew that to give in to the temptations of the flesh with him would be a mortal sin so she legged it...
