Rose The Hat = best horror villain of the decade

Wow, what an amazing character and villain! Loved her and Ferguson does a spectacular job in bringing the character to life. Every scene she did was riveting and you could feel the tension and underlying evil behind her. Hands down the best horror movie villain of the past decade.

One of the best, for sure. Great performance by Ferguson. So menacing and cold blooded.

It's like I watched a different movie. Somebody else on this board said this so I'll ask the same question:

What did Rose the Hat actually DO that elevates her to this super villain status in your mind?

Through the whole movie she or her gang get schooled every single time they go up against the good mutants. I thought the blonde 15-year-old was scarier with that 'kill yourself' bit and the snake bites thing.

So what makes Rose the Hat so scary to you? What did I miss?

(FWIW, I'm a fan of Feguson so have nothing against the actress herself...)

I have a few ideas. Her scene with Violet was unnerving. Her uncaring nature towards the baseball kid was freaky. Her ambition was bigger than her abilities, but that hubris added another layer. I may agree the blond was more vindictive, but she didn't seem to have the layers. I wanted to see more of Rose the hat.

You nailed my complaint. She kills two kids. And her eyes glow. Kinda meh for a horror movie.

Hannibal Lecter feeding a guy his own brains... now that's scary and unnerving AF.

The vampire family of Near Dark strolling into a bar and eviscerating everyone after first tormenting them. That's scary and unnerving AF.

Every Friday the 13th movie, we see Jason bury hatchets, spears, and other sharp implements into the bodies of his vicitms. That's scary and unnerving AF.

The rotting bathroom corpse that rises out of the tub to take Danny and seduce Jack in the original The Shining. That's scary and unnerving AF.

And on and on...

As depicted in this movie, Rose wasn't powerful, lacked any sort of leadership or planning skills.

Of the few evil mutants the movie showcases -- Rose, the blonde kid and Crow Daddy -- Rose is the least interesting.

You wanted to see more of her character, but I was actually more intrigued by the character of Crow Daddy. He was the one who came closest to being an actual physical threat to Abra and Danny. He's the one who found the blond mutant girl. He seemed to appreciate more than Rose the threat posed to the group by Abra and Danny. The actor played him with a threatening charisma.

I'd see another movie with this character before I watched one about Rose.

I agree. For me Rose was one of the least effective horror villains I've ever seen. For not one moment did I find her remotely threatening, menacing, or evil. I felt no tension whatsoever at any point in the whole film tbh. The elongated delivery of her lines felt more like art school slam poetry than menace. The only feeling I got from her whatsoever is that she's kind of hot.

reply

"...kind of hot..."

I would not disagree with that. ;)

Otherwise, yeah, I never felt any tension, suspense, sense of dread... all those things you normally associate with a horror. I mentioned in another post that, at times, it was more like an X-Men movie... The Shining, Steam or whatever it was called comes off more like some sort of mutant superpower, especially when Flanagan drags out the Storm-style white eyes.

reply

Yeah I just replied to your other post. I agree.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with a horror film not being scary. I also think this had the potential to work as a much differently flavored, as you say supernatural X-Men sort of movie, and break away from its direct connection to The Shining, but it was handled in a way that didn't allow it to own its unique identity.

And the sexiest!..

That too!
