I think the point was he was still drunk/hungover, and didn't realize the woman was dead or dying from an overdose, as opposed to just sleeping.

And moreover, the fact that Halloran's ghost shows up and tells him to put her money back argues for the girl still being alive at that point -- after all, it would only matter that he was taking her money if she were still alive to suffer the lack of it.

Those are some good points! I repeatedly rewound between the ghostly appearance of Deenie and Tommy and the earlier scene to see if she was indeed dead on the bed, as they appear so soon after Danny's departure. She moves as Tommy is placed on the bed, and Halloran makes no suggestion she'd be dying there and then.

Deenie's situation is tragic nonetheless, and I've read Tommy haunts Danny repeatedly in the novel, deepening his remorse. What we get in the film is heart-wrenching enough, though.
