Steven Spielberg should've directed it
Imagine how it'd be great had if they got him, considering his close friendship with Kubrick back in the day and how he knows how to replicate certain touches of the master's visual style while not losing touch of his filmmaking style (A.I. Artificial Intelligence).
If you've followed Rob Ager's studies of Kubrick/Spielberg's works, there is evidence to suggest that Steven may have possibly understood some of Stanley's hidden intentions within his films. That in it of itself, would make him the single most qualified director to make a follow-up to a Stanley Kubrick film today. Not to mention of course, the loving tribute he made to The Shining in Ready Player One.
I haven't seen any of Mike Flanagan's works, but from what I've seen from the trailers, his style of filmmaking and methods of employing scares seem really by-the-books and generic. Whenever he isn't replicating shots from Kubrick's film, it looked as though the film could have been directed by anyone. I'll wait, of course, till after I see the film to decide whether my judgment of his direction was valid or not from seeing the trailers.
Any thoughts?
