Why the Aussie accent?

now the seasons finished I'm left wondering - why was Xavier played with an Australian accent? The character was English, both his parents had English accents, he had a Union Jack Flag, and Joshua Sasse is English who has a very British accent naturally.
Yet Xavier couldn't have sounded more Aussie ! a perfect Australian accent. The best I've heard from a non-aussie.
Why? I thought the answer would be revealed when his true identity was revealed - but no.

Wait. He was putting on an Australian accent? I thought it was Irish. He even mentions Ireland in the show a few times. Boy am I bad at hearing accents...

Irish ? haha yeah you are bad :) try listening to Chris Hemsworth and then comparing him to Chris O'Dowd or Colin Farrell.
The only references to Australia in the show where when Evies' father said an "Australian guy or British" bought the washing machines, and later the was a photo of Xavier in front of the Opera House.

Have to give Joshua credit though - Kate Winslet is the only other non-aussie I've heard sound so natural

There was a character (Aiden) on ALL MY CHILDREN about ten years ago who was from England. I was really confused because I swore his accent was Australian, and I was wondering why the show had a guy effecting an Australian accent when it should have been English. Well, it turned out that the actor was from England. So, I think there is a particular English accent that sounds Australian to people not used to it.

I thought all the same-I watch a lot of Brit TV and many international movies and thought his accent totally Aussie= I have S African friends, and been able to discern between Kiwi , Aussie, and S. Africans. I know there are many accents throughout England, (not the UK, Scotch, Welsh, Irish pretty easy to ID) but still would have thought him an Aussie.
