So, movie is a medieval fantasy but game is Japanese fantasy?

Characters in the movie predominantly European with Latin names and such but the crown prince is Japanese? His father sure didn't appear to be Japanese in the movie. I get a weird disassociation vibe or disconnect, like the game world and the movie world are two separate realities. I haven't played an FF game since the days of the old Super NES, so I'm probably missing a lot of backstory. Or maybe it's just I don't play a lot of Japanese games these days, nor watch a lot of their film. That was me for 2 decades in the past...

The prince isn't Japanese, neither are the other characters European seeing as there are no such places as Japan or Europe in their world. SE usually keeps the races abstract for their imaginary countries in Final Fantasy games. There are some allusions to real life races but mostly they follow the anime logic of big yet slanted eyes and white skin. Still they are a Japanese company and some of the human models they use for their characters are Japanese so I guess some of that ends up coming through.

Much the same as Oda does for One Piece though of course the characters are based off our world archetypes, countries etc. Luffy for example is supposed to be Brazilian. Only Zoro is Japanese. I guess Audi exists in the cinematic FF world though. Still it's jarring to have those cinematic characters and then try to play a game based in the same world where no one will look like them (other than the crown prince if you watched the film past the end title credits)...

Looks Japanese in the game...
