Why did reviewers tear this one up?

Just watched the first ten minutes, and special effects and action wise it was everything I wanted from a FF movie. It was what I hoped TSW would be back in the day. Fantastical setting, iconic FF creature design, Elaborate costumes and armor, etc. And the story seemed like a perfectly enjoyable action adventure movie. What gives? I heard the movie feels like an extended CG opening for the game and it doesn't work as a standalone film (just a first chapter in the story that will continue with FF15). Is that true? It doesn't have an ending?

I have never played a single FF game - I only watch the movies. I am not a real "fan" of FF so you can consider me as normal a viewer as any. I watched it through once and it is pretty damn spectacular. People say they watched it multiple times and don't get it, but trust me-if you pay attention then the plot is not rocket science. There is a very small handful of things that don't make sense, but are not really related to the plot so much as individual characters.

In my opinion it has a plot and an ending, so it is definitely possible to consider it standalone movie, were it not for the game.

My first FF film, never played the games and want to know what happens next. Did the princess reach Noctis? Did they get married? Did Noctis summon the power of the ring and use it against the empire? So many questions.....

It's a movie but it's not a movie. I consider it part of the game. They tore it up for that.

I could imagine not liking it at all if you weren't invested in the game or cared about FF at all. I actually feel like it's better to watch this after playing through a decent chunk of the game to truly care about the story.
