I am so in love with the original, and posted about it on that board when everyone was shrieking "WHY would they remake this stupid film???" I fear that Nicole Kidman might be a bit too conventionally beautiful to play Miss Margaret however. Part of what made Geraldine Page really work in the '71 version was she did seem like a believable spinster...she's not conventionally attractive, and rather bulky. But you'd think Kidman in any era would have had men falling at her feet her whole life...so we'll see how that plays out. Maybe it will turn more on that she trusts this soldier emotionally above other men (?) she's met over the years. Or something. We'll see, but I find the original so compelling. It's very atmospheric and haunting. And has the rare sad ending!

As a big fan of the original (I own it on DVD) I'm curious about this. The original was such lurid, campy fun in a way only a 70's film could be. I worry a modern version would be too tasteful for it's own good. Looking on IMDB, I didn't see anyone playing Hattie who was one of my favorite characters. Having a slave character is probably no longer acceptable even if accurate for the time. Also curious if it will have the same Gothic horror tone, or be more of a romance. Still, looking forward to it.
