I was wondering why I hate the smart son. Then I realized why...

He's the male live-action incarnate of Lisa Simpson.

Then the question becomes: Why do you hate Lisa Simpson?

^^ THIS.  As strident as she can be, especially in later seasons, she really is both the conscience and the brains in her family.

Also, after last night's ep (1x8, "Ray-Cation"), I don't know how anybody could NOT love the li'l guy, or at least feel for him, after he sacrificed his class trip to be there for the heartbroken JJ -- even more so considering how he himself had been treated throughout the episode up until that point (particularly how his family couldn't even be bothered to help him get somewhere on time while they expended so much more effort on micromanaging JJ's date). Given his own recent experience with Jillian (in 1x5, "Halloween"), Ray was in a better position than anybody to help his brother cope with Claire's rejection; and I thought it was genuinely touching how Kenneth returned the favor by inviting him to use his hot tub.

I loved Lisa Simpson until she became the preachy mouthpiece for Matt Groenig's hippie politics. The breaking point for me was when she ruined her dad's cookout with her self-righteousness. Pull that crap in my family and you'll be out of the house AND the will.

Also, Lisa's been eight for over 25 years (with the occasional adolescent storyline). This kid's gonna grow up. That'll make room for divergence.

The smart son? And you all knew he meant Ray. Does that mean you are all assuming that JJ is not smart?

I can't speak for the other posters, but I assumed Ray based on the Lisa Simpson comparison -- the nerdy, unpopular middle child who worries too much and sort of harps on the rest of the family.

I was certainly put off by the OP's use of "smart" in the topic header -- JJ is also quite smart, clever and witty in his own way -- but given his disdain for the Simpsons character, I just figure the OP is probably one of those people who equates "smart" with things like "nerd," "uncool," "smug," "know-it-all," etc.
