This was OK

The story seemed a little rushed, you don't really get enough time to get to like/know the characters before you find yourself in the thick of the action.

Spoilers: [?]
You don't really ever find out why the gov't kills or tries to kill the whole population and the story is very very unrealistic, the main characters get out of sticky situations almost comically.

I agree with this. The story is definitely rushed and the movie never managed to convince me that it's set in an almost empty post-apocalyptic America because it never takes its time to create the proper atmosphere.

Yeah - the whole film is somewhat comical.
Then again, most of these post-apocalyptic films depict the same old thing - people branching off into gangs, restarting slave trade, killing each other en masse. We've all seen mad max, but come on - there are by far more possible outcomes to apocalypse.

In this instance, the background info as to why the gov. has opted to kill everyone is dodgy as fuck. Why did all animals die? And why didn't all human beings die? And why did they all turn into savages almost immediately? Plants didn't die - you could go vegetarian and survive for eternity.

The thing is though - based on how unrealistic the reactions from various peeps here were to near-death experiences, and the happy radio station - I can't help but feel like they were going for comedy/horror mashup, but miserably failed on both ends.

If all the population went to hunt and forage we would run out of food in days. Theres simply too many people for that lifestyle now. Altrough if you kill 99,9% of the population then yeah, you could probably go back to hunter/gatherer societies. Just remmeber that the gangs depicted in this movie is far more human than historical hunter gatherers were. They would literally trade children slaves between tribes.

Totally agree ! Okay for a one time watch i suppose .... but as soon as the film finishes you start thinking wtf was all that about and so much of the plot does not make sense !

But still kinda okay i guess .

ok is being nice. I hated it. I fell asleep not even halfway in and Kate Bosworth totally annoyed me in this.

It came across as a dark comedy in places. I presumed an EMP was set off in present day as there CDs in some houses so definitely not set in the 70s.
Just posted on here, but I'll repeat; an EMP would make all phones and newer cars useless as the electrics would be fried but old cars would be fine ... & I presume CB radio ?
