the original black paladin - spoiler
Zarkon claims he is the original black paladin? I don't remember that from the old series. Was Voltron created as an evil weapon and then taken by the Alteans?

shareEveryone needs to stop thinking about the original. This is not the original.
shareThis show is a lot better than the original
shareYeah, you're right. How silly of me to think back to the old series, when it is something I grew up with and cherished and made me excited to see this new series come back. Hang on, let me clear the hard drive...BING..great now it is gone. What were you saying?
shareI do recall Zarkon saying he had the Black Paladin's weapon--of sorts--as a key to make the Black Lion work. Since this is a new series and only using both the 1984 and GoLion versions reference, it wouldn't surprise me to see the twist in this plot
shareThe weapon he was using in the fight against the red lion was the same hand weapon/key (forget the name) that the others all have, except for the black lion's, which was stated to be lost with the original black paladin.

Apparently, it's a nod to the comic reboot by Dynamite where King Zarkon was the original pilot of the Black Lion and one of the original Earth scientists who created Voltron.
I hope they don't take the rest of that backstory as it seems a little contrived, but I do like the idea of Zarkon being the original Black Paladin. Tying Zarkon as the original Black Paladin makes that title fake-out at the last episode more interesting, and adds a space opera feel to the series.
Season two reveals that the Black Lion was forged by King Alfor from a meteor which struck Zarkon's home world. Presumably, Altea and Galra were at peace at the time, and Alfor asked Zarkon to be the first paladin. It's also revealed that the planet was destroyed, and it's an easy leap to think that its destruction may have played a major role in Zarkon's about-face.
