I'm done with the Oscars.

The Shape of Water was the worst movie nominated for best picture. The voters are insane.

reply

Yep..I was done years ago. Don't need the BS politics either. This was such a shitty year for movies and yet they had 9 nominees (self serving to boost sales of "Oscar nominated for best picture" features). Doesn't mean shit anymore.

reply

I don't think the movies this year were that bad, but The Shape of Water was lousy.

reply

This is the first year that I'm not going to watch them. Too much PC BS these days.

reply

I genuinely believe if Tumblr and Twitter was removed from existence, life would be simple again. Because honestly, all this shit seeping into Hollywood is FROM Tumblr/Twitter culture.

I'm a left-leaning moderate myself, but.

reply

I think Shape of Water was the 3rd best out of the nominated films. It isn't just the Academy voters who loved it. It got great reviews and won the Critics choice award, the PGA, and the DGA.

reply

I know that and I just don't get it. The movie is a mess and it rips off the style of Jean Pierre Jeunet's films. That is a crime.

reply

Even Jeunet has said the same thing as I. There is a scene in the movie Delicatessen that is so blatantly copied that Jeunet should even sue because of the similarities.

reply

Agreed.

reply

It also has an "Amelie" look; but del Toro had a point that both of them are inspired by Terry Gilliam.

reply

Inspiration and blatant theft are two different things.

reply

You realize most reviews these days are fake don't you? By the time the first few weekends are up the studios have recouped their investment and are making a profit (most times) and the viewers were sold a pile of shit. This movie had no business being nominated for Best Picture ...PERIOD. A lot of people have caught on and stopped watching the Academy awards though, because of the endless political bullshit agenda and sanitizing of the hosts. It's lost it's shine. They tried to cow-town to the MTV generation with humor, then someone got their feelings hurt and they went bland and interjected the political grandstanding and political correctness creeped into nominations.

If you liked the movie, fine, but it's not for critical thinkers and not deserving of consideration for Best Picture.

This will join Crash & The Hurt Locker as the worst winners ever.

reply

“You realize most reviews these days are fake don't you?”

No, I do not. Because I’m not a paranoid loon.

agreed. Nothing but politics and agendas.

I'm going to watch this tonight with a few friends... Will judge for myself... It has it's work cut out for it.

A friend of mine was shocked that this won... She said she thought it was an ok movie whe pn she saw it at the London Film Festival, but no way near the best last year... Her favourites were Call Me By Your Name and Get Out, but she hasn't seen half of the nominees...

My favourite by far was Dunkirk and I've seen all apart from Call Me By Your Name (didn't open near me, but will watch it later) and Shape of Water... I won't bother with The Post until it hits video...

reply

Call Me By Your Name and Phantom Thread were my favorite films. Three Billboards and Lady Bird were good also. The rest of the nominees were pretty solid, but The Shape of Water is a mess of a movie. Del Toro definitely stole the look, style and ideas from Jean Pierre Jeunet. Jeunet is a visionary that deserved more accolades, while Del Toro is good, but I have no respect for someone who steals from others work.

reply

I'm surprised not more people are talking about it

reply

Jean Pierre Jeunet even talks about it, but no one is listening. It is just like all the women who were sexually harassed by Hollywood big wigs. Everyone knew about the wrongs that were taking place, but no one said anything. Del Toro is a big deal in Hollywood, plus he is a minority, so you can't say a word. If you say anything the Hollywood elite will eat you alive.

reply

It's incredible...

What about the critics, the internet movie commentators and such? Most of them are probably ignorant as it's not about comicbook movies... But that is not an excuse...

reply

Sometimes the critics are as bad as the Hollywood elites. This is the worst movie to win best picture since Crash. Last year I wanted La La Land to win, it didn't, but at least Moonlight was good.

reply

I just watched it... Wow... It's such a slight movie... It's a cartoon... So trivial, on the nose and without subtext or nuance...

The characterisations are cartoons of what people think old 1950s movies are like... Many actual movies from the period handled these portrayals with more nuance and sophistication... It wouldn't be that big a problem if the movie itself was dazzeling in how over the top it was, but it isn't... Only the violence is thrilling, everything else is minor...

Oddly enough, Michael Shanon's character has the fuller, less that one dimensional role... but even then it's more like one and a half dimensions 😂

Compared to the movies that have been nominated, nevermind movies that were ignored, this should not have won best picture, nor should it have won best director... To be honest, it barely should have been nominated for either...

It's a "decent" (yes, that's a reference to the general in the movie) genre flick, with some stereotypes and some interesting design... I liked the way it was shot, but not in the same league as the better movies in that category...

The competing movies this year were much stronger...

reply

The movies I think should win never seem to. This year I was hoping Call Me By Your Name or Phantom Thread would win. Even Three Billboards and Lady Bird were good enough to win. But, The Shape Of Water. No way!

Shape of Water is a good film. I would not say it is worthy of Best Picture, but it was surely worth a nomination.

I thought Crash was good too ... and also not really worth Best Picture, but that wasn't a great year in film.

reply

Brokeback Mountain was better than Crash. Crash did not deserve best picture; Brokeback Mountain did.

I felt all the hype for "Get Out" was undeserved, but I was actually pleasantly surprised to find this film deserving. I haven't seen all the nominees (I still plan to watch "Three Billboards" but am going to skip "The Post", "Call Me by your Name", and "Darkest Hour"), but I liked it the best of those I have seen--although "Phantom Thread" comes close. The two 2017 movies I liked better were not nominated in this category: "Blade Runner 2049" and "Loving Vincent".

reply

I just don't know why people want to skip Call Me By Your Name. It is an extraordinary film. It just isn't a love story between two young men. There are lots of gay themed films that I just haven't liked, but this one goes far beyond. The acting, the music, the screenplay, and the cinematography are unbelievably moving. Don't skip it. I really think you will be moved by this movie. The only thing is that it is a slow burn, but the last 45 minutes of the movie make that wait worth it.

If you insert a man and a woman in as the main characters, the movie still works. It doesn't focus on their both being men, but it focuses on first love and the joy and pain that comes with it. Everyone needs to see it.

reply

It had some naked chicks though. So I don't know.

reply

It's a party for rich people to worship themselves, the Oscars has been shit for like 15 years now.
