Why don't they just call this the Abe Sapien story?

It's clearly him.

The Shape of Water sounds more artsy-artsy. Maybe they were aiming for the Oscars. Superhero movies would never win Best Pictures.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon? maybe

Ambiguity or it could be another creature of the same species (for all you know a relative). Then again, Del Toro has denied any connection between this film and his Hellboy series.

But if it were an unofficial prequel, “The Shape of Water” is a great and better title.

According to Del Toro its an unofficial sequel to Creature From The Black Lagoon.

He does refer to CFTBL in a Kimmel interview that's on YouTube. I'm sure he's repeated that connection in other interviews as well.
