Okay

So according to a THR interview with del Toro, Doug Jones is apparently playing the amphibious man in which he had previously played one in two other films directed by the same guy. How can this not be a solo Abe Sapien prequel? Or is this supposedly a meditation on if del Toro really made it a straight up Abe Sapien story. Originally I thought this would be a return to form to likes of his work on Pan's L and Devil's Backbone. I think it's odd he'd have Jones play the same character again just in a different world.

I think he's playing off the Abe Sapien character somewhat, because he's said its one of his favorite characters, but I don't think it's a prequel because the timeline and setting doesn't match. In the Hellboy universe, Abe was discovered in a coma under St Trinian's hospital in the same capsule he'd been confined in in the 1800's, and the time he was discovered was in the early 1980's. This film is set in 1963. Del Toro has spoken before about how much he likes the character of Abe and Doug's portrayal, so I think he is playing off of that for a different character, but I don't think it's Abe. It may be another creature of his species, however.
