Is Tonya a Mary Sue in this film?

A provocative but relevant question.

Do we assume that Tonya is the supremely talented skater and antihero who survived the brutality of her background? Was she really super talented? How does the real life of Tonya Harding compare to the fictional Margot Robbie interpretation?

reply

No. She had to cripple another woman to better her odds. Even then they lost to the ukranian girl.

Nancy? Is that you?

Thanks for the umpteenth similar post on this topic.

Harding had physical talent, but she was a flawed person.

She was hardly a Mary Sue.

I think what some of the angry commenters on here are missing is that the movie is a satire/dark comedy that is 100% from the perspective of Harding with her serving as an unreliable narrator in the form of the fake interview segments. Cutting to her saying "That wasn't my fault" any time she made a mistake, her complaining about the judges and claiming she only lost because they didn't like her and so forth. The writer/director are not purporting that that's actually the truth. In fact her flaws are being put clearly on display.

reply

No. I wish you would familiarize yourself with the writing trope before asking nonsensical questions.
