I hope he did 'Do it' and it isn't a Cop out

I reckon it could turn out to be that Finchley is innocent of rape, but that the moral will be that if you constantly sh** around and act in a sleazy, consequence-free manner –even if you don’t actually rape or assault anyone- you increase your chances of one of those encounters turning round and biting you on the arse.

And that if you’re so self-involved that you think you can do this with impunity, then you won’t notice when your child has issues that will only get worse; and if your wife accepts it, then it will screw up your child’s idea of what a strong adult relationship is and she'll make stupid romantic choices in life. I don't think Dee was sexually abused- I think she was emotionally neglected by a self-involved father and an emotionally cold mother who couldn't end their marriage out of a mistaken sense of pride and religious guilt.

And if you’re a wife that can go so deeply into denial about what makes a healthy marriage, then you’ll also be able to deny -or be blind to- your child needing real affection and help. It’s not to say that Marie is responsible for what Paul does, but the fact that she was able to lock up her feelings about his constant infidelities shows she’s not in touch with her emotions, making her a distant woman and thus a difficult mother for Dee to open up to when needing help. I think Dee as a child idolised her more emotionally available but deeply immature and unreliable father because he spoilt her and Marie was jealous and too distant.

So I reckon that the initial rape claim(s) might turn out to be false -possibly because the accuser is from a similarly dysfunctional background or felt angry about being used back in the day of when casual sexual exploitation of fame was accepted or ignored- but that the allegations lifted the rock for all to see why they could fall on such fertile ugly ground beneath. Paul might turn out to be legally innocent, but morally guilty.

I sometimes wonder how many famous men now live in fear of exactly how old, or genuinely willing, the sexual conquests of their younger days were, and whether or not they have a different interpretation of events.

Blimey- I did go on a bit there! Just shows what great food for thought this series has been giving!

I had a horrible feeling that it might have an open ending. A sort of "decide for yourself" thing. I hope it doesn't, because this has been an amazing programme for making you doubt what you're seeing or assuming. I don't think that he did anything to his daughter either. I think it's more that she's been aware from a young age how *beep* up her parents relationship with, and living in that sort of tension has destroyed her. That's where her drug addiction cane from.

I'm sure that there is something weird about Tim Mcinnery's character though.

I agree about Carl (McInnerny) -at best he's a similarly sleazy character trying to hide a similar past; at worst he's been molesting Dee and/or Rebecca, maybe when Paul was drunk or something and can't remember it, whatever- ie, there's something still more to come from Carl.

I thought your post was great Midge. I'm glad he didn't abuse the daughter because that would make her leaving her own children in his care unforgivable.

(have I got that right? I was half asleep!)

Goodnight, good luck and may your God go with you

There was nothing weird about Karl at all at the end. He just wanted to be with Marie.

It's that man again!!
