Karl (Spoilers)

I cant help but think that even though he was supposed to be a sympathetic character, bottom line is that he covered up the rape of a child and slept with his best mates Wife.....

Seriously, what a Scumbag!!!

I thought Rebecca was an adult although not sure an age was given?

reply

In his defence he was saving his own Ass.

If he had came forward then he would have to investigated as well and his career would have been destroyed even though he was innocent

reply

Pretty sure she was stated as being 15 at the time.

As for saving himself, maybe, but he obviously had little to no conscience. How could he sleep at night after seeing/hearing what the experience did to the Woman? He knew full well what his mate put her through.

Men can bottle and look past anything up. That's what scary about my gender

We are very remorseless

reply

It's not specific to men. Women are just as capable of doing the same thing.

Or, at least, some women are, just as some men are. The issue is personality types, not one gender or the other.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

[deleted]

not sure that is very scientifically arrived at.

reply

Also, the flowing tears in the courtroom indicated to me that he had some sort of remorse, and I think it was honest. I think he, like a lot, maybe most men, would do anything they could to avoid prosecution, jail, humilation rationalizing that it will do not good at that point. The points this miniseries gets to are really powerful. It is brilliantly done. I did not like, or maybe I did not get why the wife would have slept with Karl. When she left, did she go with Karl, and why? Karl protected him by heading her off when she was going to his trailer.

reply

The babysitter was said to be 15, and it caused a stir when that new accusation came out as Marie said something like "they think you're a paedophile?!", so that would imply that the first accuser was not underage

reply

Not that it excuses him from lying about what he saw and letting him get away with it

reply

He knew full well what his mate put her through.

You're obviously working on the assumption that he was guilty although he had "gotten away with it". I don't think you can assume that. There is a possibility within the story that "she" may have been lying, mistaken, or confused.

reply

They hedge on this all through the miniseries, but I think we see from the context that he was guilty, which is what his wife eventually concludes and leaves him.

reply

To be fair he slept with a woman he fancied for 40 years and whose husband was cheating on her for 40 years.

It's that man again!!

reply

The question is why she slept with him after knowing what he was? Now wonder the daughter was so troubled.

reply

Yeah, Jackpot, he was a scumbag.

In more ways than you've mentioned, in my opinion, though it was fairly subtle. Every time he was shown publicly expressing concern for his old "friend" and partner, he was also using Paul to make his own public statement of "I'm nothing like that" and "Look what a generous, understanding person I am", and making sure people didn't think to accuse him as well.

reply

Marie said he was incapably of love and always seemed to be using his best friend ... a total liar.
