Ho do you know the fictional location is supposed to be the real Bay City Michigan and not some fictional town?

Actually there are a number of real and fictional Bay Cities:

So one of the characters mentioning Michigan would make the identification more likely.

The last I heard, giant monster attacks aren't more common in Michigan than anywhere else.
