I agree with your assessment.
He didn't quit, he just couldn't hold on any longer.
If they wanted to do this the military way, they should have made it so it's not a drop it and you lose thing. It should have been keep holding it up until you can't hold it up any longer. The only way to not have to hold it up is if you quit. Sure, it would have been longer but just time lapse it.
I would have had them holding at least 50% of their body weight and they can drop it as many times as they want but they had to pick it back up immediately. Imagine they were out there for 8 hours shaking trying to keep this bag up. That's a challenge and it only ends when someone quits.
That's basically how it was at SFAS. At the end of the events during PT week, for instance the log PT, every had to face another group and hold the log over their head. We were allowed to taunt the other group and the first one to drop the log had to find another group that lost. The one that held it up got to drop their log and rest until only one team remained.
These challenges seem weak to me but that's probably because I've been through SFAS...

this week the woman from the red team should have gone. she was not dunking all the way nor were her burpees the full movement. i mean i guess they cut them a little slack like that, but she was the only one really cutting corners in the footage we saw. also, they were all having to wait for her and i feel like stopping your rhythm would really mess with you in this one. i wish they had had a rhythm counted out for them and had to keep up and all move at the same pace.

I think they may tilt things in certain people's favor, but I dont think it's scripted. Maybe it's just me refusing to believe something with such heart is scripted?
