Great storyline but...

Something about the animation keeps bothering me. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Their movements remind me of video games from the early 2000's. It feels like it doesn't match the style of animation.

Omg I thought it was just me!
I sometimes felt like I was watching a movie on my Sega Dreamcast. But still enjoyed the series.

Damn I miss that system.

RIP All SEGA systems

They're using 3D cellshade, facial expression and speech usually suffers in this style but have superior fight scene animations. No more cheap stills where the hero yell "yahh" and we're shown ONE single frame then all the enemies suddenly down in the next scene.

With 3D cellshade style, we actually get to SEE the characters swinging that bat, bat connecting to the other's face and getting knock down.

There're pros and cons and ultimately an acquired taste.

I love the animation, it looks so realistic. It reminds me of Ghost in the Shell.

I dunno, I really like the animation. Binge watched the whole lot on netflix and it's up there as one of my favorites for both story and visuals. Personal preference I guess

reply

The visuals are phenomenal to me. Everything is life like and the show really has a mature quality because of it. It's not the Dragon Ball Z from your childhood.

And the quality of the series doesn't just stem from the incredible animation style. This show takes the philosophy of existentialism, explores the necessity of altruism, and even provides a character study into a potential psycopath's (Kei) mind.

It's like The Boy (2015) meets Attack on Titan meets Tokyo Ghoul

Best animation I've seen in forever.

The animation looks a bit iffy at moments, but the super low FPS is what bothers me the most. I feel like it takes away from otherwise enjoyable experience. :/

reply

Agreed. It makes it look so cheap. The movements aren't natural at all. Luckily the storyline saves it.

reply

lol cheap is the last word on my mind when i watch Ajin. i'm very interested to know your thought process.

Cheap as in they didn't care if it looked fluid and natural. One of the reasons I love watching anime is the human reactions and the expressions. The expressions are maniquin-like, stiff, and completely unnatural. It pulls me out of the story. Just because it has good shading doesn't make it "good" animation. I really prefer the old styles better, they exude more depth and emotion. I don't like feeling like I'm watching a badly-made game intro from 15 years ago.

I couldn't disagree with you more. This series has some of the most fluid action scenes I've ever seen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9SY9EB3n4w how does any of this look stiff and unnatural? it blows my mind hearing people say this. you'd be hard pressed to find better animation than this
