Thoughts

So, I started watching this because I wanted something to practice my japanese. Anime helps but movies and dramas do a better job I think. The first episode made me cringe a lot and I thought about quitting but after a few episodes in I can say that it has me slightly hooked.

You have to take into account that the target for this show is definitely young teenager girls. Also, it's a Japanese Drama (series). There's always a lot of tropes and exaggeration as they try to be funny and yes dramatic. With that said I do think that Nao (protagonist) does become a bit too weird later on. She's not confident in the beginning but as the story progresses she becomes obsessed with Uehara. I'm on episode 16 now and the episode where she's in the hospital and almost DYING because he hasn't called or given her attention felt a bit too much. I thought she would "grow along the journey" and become secure of herself, but then again, target audience.

The best thing about the show is definitely the cast. Haruka Fukuhara as Nao is a top notch crazy/insecure girlfriend that is also cute and caring. Uehara as the "dream guy" also does a good job always looking confident and serious but having a soft spot. Marina, Nao's best friend, is super awesome and is always there for her. Mitsuishi, Marina's boyfriend, is also good in his role supporting both of them and fitting some jokes in. Issei, the ramen guy, fits the part well as he becomes sort of a big brother / love interest of Nao.

And finally, Abe. The guy who starts out as a simple sidecharacter who is mocked for confessing his love for every girl he sees and getting turned down is just so much fun later on. He makes me laugh most of the time with his corky, slightly nerdy and desperate attitude.

tl;dr:

good: cast, comedy, cinematography (good shots of both big cities and temple and stuff)
bad: small character development, over exaggeration and use of tropes

A good show if you don't take it seriously.

Abe being awesome ::::>>>> https://media.giphy.com/media/3oz8xP5W1DK6XQvR3a/giphy.gif

I love it. I've seen it twice all the way through and upon first watching it, I did cringe at certain things like at how Nao allowed Uehara to treat her certain ways. But watching it again with my husband I really saw the progression of their relationship and saw how Uehara is very oblivious to certain things and cannot read gestures/emotions properly. He has his own way of showing emotion and it comes out harsh most of the time but that's his personality. Plus, he and Nao are just teenagers, kids! In relationships they grow and learn.

I loved the episode with the parents. You really see Uehara's true emotion/intention there and Nao's maturity in the eyes of the people who know her best: her parents.

I love the quirky personality of Nao and how spastic she is! :D Typical day dreaming teenage girl. I'm into anime and manga and didn't find her over exaggerations weird at all but rather cute and hilarious. I love her friends Marina and Mitsu. I like how along with Daichi and Issei they all stand up for Nao whenever she needs them.

My only complaint is I wanted some sort of justice for Nao against the bullies at school. Man, I wanted Yuri or Uehara or SOMEONE to tell them off or smack them or push them over the bridge into the river!!! Nasty beches....

Loved your reply. I think Nao is undervalued by many readers. She sees through much of Uehara's shell right from the start. She also has a humongous sense of justice. Make no mistake - she will fight for her friends. That is what I think Uehara first sees in her, the idea of a friend is unknown to him. Later Yuri will say (in regards to his comment he was going to a friends) he has no friends. Nao tells the bullies that Uehara is NOT the shallow person they picture him as (smartest kid in the school and they see him as 'Poor Uehara'!!??). When Nao breaks the frame and she realizes how IMPORTANT it was to Uehara, she runs all over Tokyo trying to find its match. When they catch the Blackmailer, she demands an APOLOGY - not for herself but for Uehara. Yes she daydreams but who hasn't - and I'm an old 'Nam Vet. Just before Uehara collapses, I love how she can change on a dime. He is going to work and she needs to thank him for saving her even though he just 'got her' (sounds like GOOSE-OH ?). When asking to be allowed to continue living together, Nao explains that they understand each other - and up to a point they do. As you say, people grow and learn in relationships.
Enough for GMC. Have you seen Haruka Fukuhara's "Princess Moon" video? She must have been about 15 at the time. So much personality glowing out. That should come with an EARWORM ALERT!! It gets stuck in my head when I listen to it! I wonder if that got her the GMC roll!?
