The guys in the buffalo heads who were raping Alice

Were they Indians or were they Mormons disguised as Indians? That flashback was a bit confusing to me, because she was married to an Indian man and when the Sheriff rescues her, he returns her to the Indian tribe.
Plus, Frank tells the story of his family being killed and raped by Mormons disguised as Indians, but that was like 50 years before the time of the show, so are they still doing it?
If it was Indians, was it just a different tribe that was at war with Alice's husband's tribe?

They were white guys, more than likely Mormons as you point out. It was also a small callback to what Frank had endured as a child.

So that was a regular thing they (Mormons) did, spanning 50 years or more?

reply

Seems likely, yes. The unseen character Haight, who Frank mentions was his Mormon "father" who raised him after his family was massacred, was a real person who committed that atrocity in real life. If you're interested search Google for Mountain Meadows Massacre.
