The people all bent out of shape about Rufus

The ones who take offense at him being black and him making quips about being black in the places that they visit.

Tell me you would want to be black back during the times that they visit. NONE of the times that they have visited have been very hospitable for black people. They were either slaves, or even if they were free, they were looked down on and treated terribly. Tell me you would have liked being black in the 1800's.

They don't say too much about it, in fact, they don't say enough about it. If you are so damned insecure about being white that you cannot stand any reminder that things were bad for black people back then, then I feel terribly sorry for you.

Be careful who you hate, it could be someone you love.

reply

From the way blacks are currently whining about every little thing in this country, 2017 would be a horrible place for a future black time traveler to visit.

But to answer your point, how much is enough? Everywhere we look there's constant reminders about how terribly blacks were treated in the past. Yes, it was bad. But what's the purpose of dredging it up again and again? Other than to create resentment between the races, and incite a bunch of pissed-off blacks who think they're owed something for past injustices that they didn't live through, nor did current white people inflict upon them. What is the end goal? What do blacks want to end this resentment? Or don't they want an end to it, and just want to be pissed-off forever?

reply

If it was a show about today, that would be one thing. Yeah, then it is enough. But this is a show about going back in history. So it would be ridiculous to ignore the conditions that people are put in when they go back. They also point out that Lucy is treated differently because she is a woman. That isn't going to divide men and women. It's just the facts.

And we learn from history. Don't try to "whitewash" the facts. I'm not sure that they point it out enough, except that this is not a cable show where they can show the violence that befell women AND blacks. Rufus hasn't been sold yet, so there's that.

jackandler... don't feed the trolls. Its become a recent online phenomena for people to suddenly get 'highly defensive' about race. Whether it's a genuine denial that your country has a bad history, or if its just an effort to get other users triggered, its just best to ignore.

reply

The Left are the ones constantly trying to define people by their race. And when anyone points it out, the Left accuses them of being 'highly defensive'.

The truth is, the Left loves to wallow in the past, pointing out all the past injustices so they can pit one race against the other.

Of course, they conveniently leave out the fact that it's the Democrats who are the real racists. It was the Democrats who created the KKK, it was the Democrats who put in place the Jim Crow laws, it was the Democrats who fought against the Civil Rights bill, and it's the Democrats who have destroyed generations of black families by telling them they're not capable of surviving without the government's help.

reply

@sangwolf I love how these trolls tries to bring this up but ignores the fact that people can look up on wikipedia the "Southern Strategy". Please don't forget to take claim by the right that Abe Lincoln was a Republican. God you trolls are so predictable!

reply

Yeah, the 'Southern Strategy' where the Democrats and Republicans supposedly changed places. Except when you actually look at the facts, like three guys switched.

Hahahahah.

Liberals are idiots.

reply

@snagswolf

It's a true fact---they actually did switch sides in 1964, right after the Civil Rights Bill was passed. A little piece of history that you right-wing nuts always conveniently skip over, or don't want to deal with. Ha ha ha ha---you sound like the idiot who just wanted to make a stupid lame-a** joke out of something serious, and you're not even that funny (yawn.) Here's some info about it to people seriously interested enough to know (not trolls, of course):

I have noticed that. I guess it is the climate of today. They were just getting on my nerves. Whining about the little quips about being black back in history. I guarantee you NONE of them would trade places with a person of color. None of them.

But we're living in today, and we're getting tired of it being shoved in our faces. It's meant to be entertainment, not a history lesson. And as the Lone Ranger episode proved, the writers are willing to bend history to make it fit their agenda.

I never owned a slave. None of my ancestors owned a slave. I'm not going to feel guilty about something I'm not responsible for.

And yes, the feminist agenda does divide men and women. That's their goal. Just like it's the goal of the race-baiters to divide whites and blacks. Because if you keep focusing on the past when things were bad, and ignore the present, where people do have equal rights, you're going to keep the people pissed-off and attacking each other.

reply

If you think that people have equal rights now, you are living in a different world from me! That is not true. Check your privilege. I am a white woman, and I am a lesbian. My world is not equal. Things WERE getting better. If things will continue to get better or go backwards remains to be seen, but I'm not going to get political on here. There are MANY men who are feminists as well as women. Feminism does not divide men and women. Just because I want equal rights does not take away from anyone else's rights. It's not pie. We can both have the same rights.

snagswolf:
Nothing's being "shoved" in your face, you whiny-a** clueless troll. I'm also tired of trolls like you whining that you don't want to be made to feel guilty merely for being reminded of things like slavery. First of all, nobody asked you to feel guilty about ONE single damn thing, so you can let go of that bull**** right now. Second of all, it's not even about you, so stop trying to make about you. It's not. The reality is, you many have black and white and other people of color living TODAY (pretty much anyone over 50 or 60 years old) who can tell you what it was like when things like racial discrimination was pretty much the law of the land and white people could get away with doing whatever the hell they wanted to black people and other people of color, and never have to answer for it. There are women that age and over who can tell you when both black people and women could not get the best jobs, which always went to men (in the case of black people, it was always said that they were "the last to be hired, and the first to be fired" when it came to job competition bwt black and white folks.) And both racism and sexism still exist and are both very much alive and thriving TODAY---it sure as hell didn't just go away and disappear---even when or because we just had a black man for president.

"And yes, the feminist agenda does divide men and women. That's their goal. Just like it's the goal of the race-baiters to divide whites and blacks. "

Uh,no,dear. There has always been a divide between men and women which was caused by men making damn sure women had literally no rights or control over their own bodies or their own lives for most of history in many different countries, including our own---that's why the feminist movement got started in the first place, because women decided they were sick and tired of putting up with that bull****. Black and white people (and other people of color) have always been divided because of white people

reply

That's an archieve? And why are you talking politics on a movie?

reply

(Continued from above post)

have always put themselves at the top of society and shoved literally everybody else who wasn't white down to the bottom, and kept them there through slavery and cheap labor for the majority of this country's history. And movies and TV shows have always shown that history lessons can be entertaining---like TIMELESS itself. So don't give me that " I don't wanna watch a history lesson" nonsense. You pretty much have gotten one every episode of TIMELESS that you watched. I was already familiar with most of the history dealt so far with on the show, so a lot of it was old hat to me. But it was still fun as heck to watch, the way the show presented it and made that history part of some really exciting race-against-time plots.

But,anyway, you need to hit the history books, real hard. Because you sound like a young person who dosen't have any kind of grasp of the history of how racism and sexism have always worked in this country, and since you're more than likely a white male (because white males on these boards are always the ones whining about how they don't want to see anything that isn't about them, even though 99% of everything in the media is about white people.) The fact is, slavery and a great ugly things were a part of American history---that is a damn fact, and a reality. They are not going to be erased and ignored simply because your precious little snowflake behind dosen't want to deal with or be reminded of it. Like I said, once again, it ain't about you. And the reality was, was that slavery existed in America for the majority of its history, and Americans are still dealing with the fallout and the horrible legacy of racism that it left us even to this day. That's why we still have so many problems with race and gender---it's mainly because white men don't want to be knocked off their pedestal as the dominant power, and hate the fact that white supremacy has been proven to be nothing but a bunch of racist bull**** white people

reply

Inaverted. So you talk to archieves?

reply

(Continued here again)
have always used to prop themselves up over everybody else, not only in America, but in the world. The election of trumpf was simply a backlash against the fact that we had a black president who proved that white men don't have a claim on knowing how to run this country any more. That explains why we went from a thoughtful, intelligent, black president who actually gave a damn about his fellow Americans and the core values of our country, to an arrogant, unqualified-for-the-job old, rich, spoiled white man who has not a single clue as to what he's doing in the WH, and dosen't give a damn about anything or anybody but himself and how much he can game the system to fill his own damn pockets. Anyway, enough of my rant. I hope TIMELESS gets renewed because it's a fun,well-made and thoughtful show.

reply

Well, for one thing, when are whites going to pay blacks back wages with interest for all the unpaid work their ancestors did? (By the way, I am white)

reply

First of all, my ancestors didn't own slaves. And secondly, Democrat government programs have been transferring wealth from whites to blacks for the past 50 years. Are you going to let us know when the debt has been paid so we can stop?

(By the way, I am white)

If you feel so strongly about this, how much of your paycheck are you turning over to blacks?

And by the way, this is exactly what I was talking about when I mentioned how the Democrats have destroyed generations of black families by telling them they're not capable of surviving without the government's help. You are part of the problem, telling black people they need some kind of 'reparation' to be able to be successful. The result of the Democrat's efforts is to create generations of blacks who believe someone else is to blame for their troubles, and that instead of hard work and commitment, they deserved to be given things because of their race.
Democrats don't care about blacks. They only care about their votes.

reply

And to top it all off, after the Democrats succeeded in severely limiting the chances of blacks succeeding in this country, they turn around and accuse anyone who disagrees with their 'solutions' as racists. Anyone who wants to try something different, like helping blacks become fully functioning members of society, are labeled racists and bigots who hate black people.

You'd have to laugh at the irony if it wasn't so tragic.

reply

snagswolf:

"And secondly, Democrat government programs have been transferring wealth from whites to blacks for the past 50 years. "

That's a damn lie. Honestly, you sound like a young, ignorant right-winger who swallows all the bull**** Fox news tells you, and trumpf's stupid self-serving lies about "fake news." . Grow up and start thinking on your own outside the crazy right-wing box. I am so sick of this "black people get something for nothing and taking everything from white people" bull****. Black people work, go to school, and pay taxes just like anybody else. And some of us are Democrats, some of us are Republicans, some of us are independent. Tired of ignorant racists like you always putting black people in a damn box as if we're too stupid to know where our own interests lie, or which party has our best interests at heart. We don't all think alike or agree on the same damn things---our opinions are as diverse as our lives, wherever we live in this country. (And,oh,bwt, all black people do not live in the inner city, either.) And I can tell you from where I stand, it damn sure isn't the Republicans, but not all of us rely on the Democrats either. Trust me, we have never sat around waiting for the Democrats or any political party to tell us what to do with our own lives. My point is, ignorant, condescending, right-wing talking point-spouting trolls like you never give black people the credit to know who's on our side and who isn't. Black folks have always worked and worked hard (especially during slavery, when we were paid literally nothing to live on) but black people have always been discriminated against no matter how damn hard we worked. It sure as hell didn't keep white folks from lynching us or enslaving us, or discriminating against us every damn chance they got. America was built off of the backs of black people during slavery, so you don't have to tell us a damn thing about hard work---we already know how to work. So enough of the arrogant condescending lectures, please.

reply

I will be happy to pay any former slaves back wages. Tell them to contact me.

reply

How much is enough? It would be kind of weird, to me, for them to go back in history to the places that were not so good for certain races, and/or ethnicities & not have a couple lines to that effect(remember "Tonto" not liking being called Tonto). And the character of Rufus has not made a huge deal except for a couple of times, where it was quite the bad time for blacks. The problem I see when it comes to real life, is that we don't seem to learn a thing from history. We all keep making the same mistakes. We are constantly placing people into groups, and blaming the whole. Case in point, some people blaming all police for the few INDIVIDUALS, who happen to be police, being a**holes. Or as you stated above "blacks" whining about every little thing....Not all blacks are doing this, & there's quite of few other races who are b*tching just as much. My point being is that people need to be reminded of our history, of what we did right & what we have done wrong. Maybe one day just one person will wake up, & realize that the world does not revolve around just them. And that other human beings deserve to be living on this Earth just as much as he/she does. The thing about history is, separating people based on race, gender, wealth, etc still happens. And it shouldn't.

reply

@Maryrosenkranz EXACTLY

They make very few comments...and most of it is done in a humorous way...
They could very easily show Rufus being captured and sold or beaten or any number of things. History is history, whether they like it or not.

reply

Now that I've put snagswolf on ignore, let's talk.

I really dislike the 'minstrel-like' way Rufus is written and portrayed.

He's bugged-eyed, hysterical and always displays an utter lack of confidence.

It's as if Rufus is written as the comic relief in the show with Lucy being the brains and Wyatt as the muscle.

In the Jesse James episode I really wished a little of Bass Reeves' self-confidence and nobility would rub off on Rufus.

I like Timeless but Rufus' "step'n'fetch-it" routine is getting old and very annoying.

Hate-watching says more about the viewer than it does about the show.

reply

I see your point. But, he is gaining confidence. They probably figured this portrayal would go over better with viewers than a confident, strong black guy. Hopefully he will grow as the show continues.

That part is not good, but at least we have some people of color in this show. And a lesbian. And the black guy has a love interest that is a person of color, but not black. And the lesbians are a mixed race couple. So, I'll be happy with the good things, and hope that Rufus' character grows.

At first, I was not happy with his name, but when I found out where it came from, I understood and liked it.

Be careful who you hate, it could be someone you love.

reply

I disagree about Rufus. If it wasn't for him, this show would not be watchable. He is a scientist who recognizes the potential & often actual danger of the trios' destinations. The character is also clearly not comfortable with the violent situations they find themselves in each week. I don't expect the techie-nerd on the show to suddenly become the action hero. That would be out of character. Rufus is usually the voice of reason in the trio.

Just my 11 cents on behalf of Rufus before the IMDB boards shut down.

reply

Well to a point they are written that way, but they are more than just that. They each have to have different personality traits, or it would be boring. With Rufus, in the beginning he was nervous, hesitant, etc. But as the episodes have progressed, so has he.

reply

puredieselbc:

What are you talking about? It's been made clear from the beginning that Rufus and Lucy are the brains of the outfit, and that Wyatt is the muscle/brawn (even though Rufus has gone right ahead and kicked some a** a couple of times when he absolutely had to, in order to save his companions.) I've seen the entire series except one episode (the one with Bonnie and Clyde) and Rufus has consistently been shown not only to be one of the smartest ones in the group, he's one of the people who helped design the time machine, and one of the very few who knows how to run it. And yeah, he's the funny one in the group, but he's never clowned around just for the hell of it---he's a straight-up nerd, who's also crushing on a fellow nerd who works at his workplace. So I really don't know where you're getting this stereotypical view of Rufus from, because his character is virtually nothing like what you describe. And he's used his intelligence (and his fists) to get the trio out of trouble way more than once throughout the series (like in the Alamo and JFK episodes, for example, and the one where they're kidnapped by Native Americans--he really and truly put his life on the line for them all in that one.) Sounds like you can't get past your own ridiculous, outdated stereotypes about what a black character should act like, because he's no "minstrel-like" character--that's not even remotely true. He shows that a man dosen't always have to act all macho all the time to show true confidence and bravery, and comes off as more like a real person with issues and insecurities--which is why he's fun to watch. And the actor playing him--Malcolm Barrett-definitely makes him worth watching.

reply

There were some times things were not positive for Lucy either. She was not taken seriously. She was harassed sexually, she was not allowed entrance to some things. Yes it was worse for Rufus, but there were times Lucy had trouble too

reply

^THIS

Also for Wyatt. they show him as a simple SOF operator. He isn't specialized in anything other than fluency in German and shooting people? I'm sure loads of SOF that could have been picked for the missions who are highly educated and suited for travels in the past.

reply

Yes, this too. I think that I mentioned something like that in a post up there.

There were a lot of times when things were very bad for Lucy. I just haven't noticed people complaining about that like they are about Rufus. Totally agree with you.

Be careful who you hate, it could be someone you love.

reply

You guys also need to consider the fact that this is a continuity based show. It's hard for new viewers to jump on board and not everyone has the desire to bing watch to catch up to the story. So each episode is going to have something a little familiar to it so that new viewers can jump on board.

- Rufus' quips.
- The fact that they always seem to slip up in what they say to the past figures (I've read all your books? I only wrote the one.)
- Rittenhouse mentions.
- Flynn's mission

and etc...

I believe the biggest mistake that they make is that they, apparently, look at the past from the eyes of their time. Stuff was different then, particularly peoples perceptions, attitudes and awareness. If people came from the future to now and looked at us with their perspectives, we wouldn't fare well either. But I believe we are further along than people from 100, 500, 1000 years ago. Social change apparently doesn't happen over night, unfortunately, most people do not live long enough to see the change that they want. In another post you commented about how there is not equal rights now. I have lived overseas and from what I have seen, the US/UK/Europe are far ahead of the majority (by population) of the world. They just aren't as far along as some would like
