Trash culture

We desperately need a cultural renaissance. Something is very wrong when trailer trash / ghetto trash who contribute nothing to society are celebrated and elevated. I say ‘celebrated’ not only because this movie was made but because the critics are predictably giving it good reviews.

Imagine if this were a movie about working class men drugging morally corrupt rich women and proceed to engage in sexual activity with them and steal their money.

This culture is why I have basically liberal views but can’t bring myself to support liberal causes or vote liberal. Modern liberals want to drag everyone into the gutter with them.

Note: when I refer to ‘trailer trash’ or ‘ghetto trash’, I’m referring to an attitude and behavior, not necessarily and economic class.

It has less to with culture than with female empowerment. The women in the film are working for themselves in the begging to get food on their table and pay rent. I don't think what they did after that was right but it just shows how desperate times can change people.
The reason critics are giving it good reviews is that it speaks to different people and it is very well made. It's not just about the story there are other things to be considered too.
The acting was very good, especially Lopez and Wu had very good chemistry and worked well together. The other girls fit in just as well. There are many scenes that are not just well-acted but are beautifully equipped and choreographed. The tracking shots in the begging and end are perfectly symbolic and the soundtrack is very well chosen most of the time.
It's not a movie that wants us to take away anything but it is just fun to watch. Sure it has its flaws but so do most movies.

If "The women in the film are working for themselves in the begging to get food on their table and pay rent", then they should be going after the club owners who charge them for working and take hefty percentages of their earnings, not the clients who give them money. Does that make sense?

Stippers make pretty good money. They could choose to work in a shop if they dont like it.

They are hardly begging.

I prefer not to be a garbage collector so I dont. And if I did choose garbage collecting it doesnt pay as well as stripping.

You shouldn't be allowed to have the name movie expert. The acting was very good? Not only wasn't it VERY good, it was pretty bad actually.

This movie wasn't "very well made" either.

I think Lopez and Wu were very good. The other actresses did well but nothing special. I think there were some interesting approaches and like I said some nice choreographies, cinematography, and soundtrack. Sure, it's not the best movie I have ever seen and certainly not the best movie of the year but it was entertaining. Hustlers is the kind of movie that I can watch once and enjoy it very much and then I need a few years break before I watch it again. I found it thoroughly entertaining and it certainly was an easy watch ;)

You're not a liberal and never were.

You aren't a girl. But maybe you were.

reply

You've never met a real liberal!

reply

Not a liberal...but I approve of this thread.

What a dumb post.

I'm a dude, but I'm smart enough to know that most successful, wealthy women aren't dumb enough to spend all their money on hookers/strippers & blow.

Matter of fact, successful women practice wayyy more self-discipline than successful men. Think of the difference between Bill Clinton & Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton has probably never been drunk or high in public & would never get caught getting dome in the Oval Office. Bill, on the other hand has been reckless his whole life, constantly gets caught cheating or sexually harrassing women, and almost ruined his own career.

The movie would be 20 minutes long if the roles were reversed because you could probably count the number of personally reckless successful women on one hand, who would leave themselves vulnerable to something like this.

The guys who got caught up by them were rich, entitled douches who had no self-control, which is why they were able to fall victim to these women.

reply

I guess no women who get date raped are being reckless either.

The question of whether it's dumb to spend money on hookers/strippers and blow is dumb is a moot point, a choice that I'm sure many don't regret. The insinuation that those who do choose to do it are somehow asking to be drugged and robbed is a pretty sickening one.

Which Clinton was the more successful? Bill or Hillary? Maybe if those wealthy women were more reckless they'd be more successful. Maybe if Hillary wasn't so reckless as to slag off half the electorate she'd be president.

reply

Maybe you're right about women not being more reckless causing them success.

It's the reason most of the people in prison are men and most of the great entrepreneurs are men.

We're naturally risk takers, which can lead to great failures or great successes.

But the fact still remain that most successful rich women don't live reckless lives.

You'd never be able to do to Oprah or Martha Stewart what these women did to those men because Oprah & Martha Stewart aren't that reckless.

The best case scenario (for a criminal) would be like some weird chick in the arts (music, Hollywood, modeling), because they're the ones who would leave themselves vulnerable to that type of thing.

Businesswomen though? Nah.

reply

You're right about everything you say.

reply

It's fine that you didn't like this movie.

But why are you pretending that movies where men exploit rich women isn't a thing? For example, two movies that come to mind are Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) and The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (1994). The only difference is, when it comes to such movies, the men are seen as suave and seductive, and the woman as either naive or undesirable. Not to mention there are actually plenty of stripper-based movies out there - this is one of the few that doesn't simply exploit the actors.

I also don't know what classifies this as ghetto, or how this relates to liberalism in general, but please forgive my ignorance there.

I don’t blame cultural decline solely on liberalism. It’s a combination of modern liberalism’s elimination of standards and unfettered capitalism.

But this particular movie’s creation and adulation from critics is a result of leftism and how it views everything through the lens of oppressed/oppressor.

Those on the far left (the loudest segment) try to make saints out of the ‘oppressed’ and elevate people who have no character or intelligence if they tow the line of leftist dogma.
