The last scene - SPOILER

As Christian Bale and Rosumund Pike are parting ways at the train station (and her looking so fetching in makeup and stylish hat), with she and the little boy about to embark for Chicago, I had the silly notion, which would have made for perfect cheesiness for this movie, that she would say, "Hey, Joe, you ever been to Chicago?"
Instead he slowly walks away, making me think, Well, that's that.. But then at the last minute he turns around, stares at the train beginning to depart, walks back, and boards the last car. And they live happily ever after. Supposedly.
Not quite as cheesy, but still.

Well, you know, they formed a bond and he pretty much has nothing or no one else to live for. It's kinda cheesy, sure, but seeing as how they both survived it only makes sense to pursue it.

I took it as he really wanted to go to Chicago but didn't want her to know because he was tired of that groupie following him around. Nothing cheesy about that.

I would've had one more camera angle after he gets into the car and closes the door.

The second angle shows Rosie and the boy running down the platform toward the camera looking for Joe.

Fade to black.

Roll credits (but more legible ones than they used).
