Did you think about this?

A lot of people are commentating on the lacking historical accuracy...

But what sort of narrative gave the impression it was supposed to be absolutley historically accurate?

Symbolic, definitely...like a dream you might have...like one purpose of modern cinema. Symbol and metaphor.

I felt like this entire film was meant to illustrate two sides of a coin, with regards to the dynamics between Native Americans and Europeans...each possible archetype of the human...

Hostile whites, compassionate whites...towards both races

Hostile Native Americans, compassionate Native Americans...towards both races.

The whole damn film kind of demystifies the clear cut aesthetic of textbook rhetoric, stays away from "color blindness", and is pretty straightforward about each possible attitude towards the human being. I don't see how that's politically correct at all.

I also thought it was a pretty balanced and objective film...there was good and bad behavior displayed by both races, and I think the argument that this film promotes any kind of a political agenda is without merit.
