I actually thought thie film was pretty well done
Sure it's mostly fictional and it's not really a "biopic" in the traditional sense but I think it was a nuanced portrayal of a person's experience and how they deal with their biracial identity in an ever changing political climate and a coming of age story. It got heavy handed at points but it had so many moments that rung true.
Like how he was so paranoid that his liberal girlfriend's parents were racist.
Or even how oblivious the girlfriend was with issues about race, or his discomfort with being the only black person in the room.
And how the guy in class asked "why is everything about slavery" and then after has to speak up about him when he is harassed by a security guard but he still doesn't get it
Or when he is paranoid about what other black people think about his relationship with his girlfriend.
It had a lot of good moments in my opinion. I know half the people here hate it because it's about Obama. But ignoring right/left politics i think it was an interesting coming in age story which involved race. It could have been about any biracial person confused with their identity.
