Annoying guy friend

I like the movie but his annoying mustache friend is hard to deal with. Especially his stupid Obama impression.

reply

I agree. He was a bit of a distraction. The characters dialogue took me out of the film. It's like they tried too hard to make him funny and clever. They should have toned him down a bit, especially with the Barry impressions.

reply

Yes, it's like he was doing a President Obama impression but Barry was just a College Kid at the time so it didn't make sense.

reply

Yeah except Barry didn't have his daddies friends to hook him up with a job on wall street though like this guy and that was the point the character was suppose to demonstrate I guess.

are you referring to Michelle?

A little weird but it established Barry as an among the people or even impoverished young person. For a split second their exchange was like watching a stereotypical scene from Big Bang, 30 Rock or even the classic Cheech and Chong. When you step back and look at the broad picture, I think this character was essential and not his ethnicity on accident as in the big picture the movie showed how Barry had access routes to 3 very specific avenues in America with him being the common denominator. There was the white preppy who seemed in awe of Barry. If you want to add a 4th there was the Alpha male who always questioned Barry and is still alive and well today. There was the Harlem Brutha who Barry was in awe of (the subtle but great College gym scene where Barry is showboat in which has his defender wide eyed and obviously shook, but when he looks over and sees the originator of the trash talk style, he is busted and understandably embarrassed) and thathe all leads to the essential hipster Indian/Middle Eastern burn out. The 4 regions cross paths but rarely and even less frequently with good results. I think when you look at it from that perspective, the film would lose something without him. Sure he isn't a perfect character, but Barry would say America is not a perfect place. He would then be criticized by Alpha Males as unpatriotic.

Well said, eloquently so.
