ending? ::spoilers::

Soooo this movie left a lot of unfinished issues.... Was the mom arrested for murder? Did she burn down the house, meaning she was the one infected with the darkness? Were the neighbors even real? And if the house burned down....how was a new family living in it at the end?

I agree. But here is what I got from the movie to answer your questions.

1./2.I believe the mom was arrested for the murder. And I think she set fire to the house also. When she met the woman in prison who was in jail for murdering her family, although she tried to stop it - I feel the darkness affected the mom the same way. She didn't want to kill her family, but the darkness made her do it.

3. The neighbors were the elderly couple living next door. Not sure of their story, but they when the mother knocked on her neighbors door, it was an elderly black man and white woman. For some strange reason, the family living in the house had visions of this couple in their younger days.

4. The house was rebuilt and remodeled. It looked completely different from when the first family was living in it at the beginning of the movie.

The ending was lame.

1. Her being arrested is unknown. No forensic evidence, no witnesses, and that video of the husband doesn't mean anything. Even if she was there they can't prove it. Her sister, her brother-in-law, and the psychiatrist, can testify about the husband's unstableness and alcohol addiction. So the ending is left to interpretation. If she is in fact the murderer than she would have killed her daughter too.

2. The neighbors actually being an elderly couple was a nice twist to emphasize the effect the house was having on the family.

Why did the ax at the end have blood on it? Did she use it on the hubby?

I was wondering that too.

I think she saw the couple as elderly all along. She did not look surprised when they met her at the door. Also, she was not bothered by his gawking at the female neighbor. When the birds were being buried, she did not see the same young woman outside. Only, he saw her. She looked very puzzled in the direction that he was staring.

The interrogation by the young , skeptical cop was stupid and just did not fit with the direction the story was going. Especially, since his older partner and most of the town were aware of the previous tragedies and supernatural attributes of the house.

Also, the cops had to knock the wall down to get Sarah! The cop could not explain that one. Oh and the woman with bee stings- they attacked her in the car! They had to give this woman a break!

I think that it was his blood on the ax. When he was n't posturing in a sinister way with the ax or knife, he was holding them with the sharp end in his hand! Okay, not a great explanation. Actually, that guy did all sorts of things with those tools except make furniture! I actually found this very funny. I am sure it was not intentional. I did expect him at some point to be wielding that silly ax screaming "Heeeere's Johnny!"

So, I think Mr. Handy Man did what she said. He burned the house down.

This movie left me with SO many questions. All that have been mentioned but also - what was the point of the man being in the sister's bedroom? I get that he was a ghost, but what was the point of that whole storyline? That cold have been edited out. Eh, the whole movie could have been edited out in my opinion. I wish I hadn't wasted my time. And now I'm wasting even more time thinking and writing about i!

PS FURTHERMORE, how did they have that video to watch as 'evidence'? I would assume him and all his belongings burned in the fire.
