I can see your point, OP.
I think the major hint was Owen's shirt in the final episode (it said Gaylord). His little Toto dog is a big sign. His shallow attempts of proving masculinity (his motorcycle and "rockstar hearthrob" image). Also, the fact that he can't remember Miranda's name, but remembers Patrick's name, no problem. AND, his grand, public engagement was more than likely an attempt to throw people off of his gay tendencies.
Also, just because he got engaged to a woman, does NOT mean he's straight. Keep in mind, Owen's character is a God fearing religious bible thumper type. Even if he wasn't in denial about being gay, and even toyed with the idea of "coming out" this is a HUGE risk for someone so active in the church, AND a small town, where the word will spread like wildfire.
So, yeah...... I think he's closested gay as well, or at the very least, bisexual.

I thought his shirt said "Gaynord" (the director's last name). But still valid point - it did have the word "gay" in it.
