Drop the unfunny friends

Not that the show would be all that more or less interesting without them. Recycling King Of Queens loser friends doesn't add anything to the show.

Why have a middle child if she's invisible? Also, is the oldest suppose to be an 18-year-old high school senior or college freshman?

Kendra is 21.

reply

This whole cast should be repleaced starting with wife , and Kendra and her boyfriend , ZERO chemistry between those two

reply

They should replace Kendra with someone funny and it won't matter how old she looks.

reply

I wish they would have used the actor who played "Timmy" on Rules of Engagement in the "Chale" role. Now that guy was funny. The one they have now is just worthless.

reply

I think that is what frustrates me the most about the show. The Chale character has the potential to be a great source of humour as a thorn in Kevin's side. He is essentially the Arthur character, the unwanted guest but reluctantly accepted because of family loyalty.

Adhir Kalyan, who played Timmy in RoE, would have been perfect. And before anyone says he is too old to play a recent University graduate, Kalyan is two years younger than the guy who plays Chale.

Also, Kalyan has already worked with K. James in Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

reply

The problem is that Kalyan would have ended up being the breakout star of the show (ala Fonzie) and they would probably cut him to keep him from showing up Kevin and the rest of the putrid cast.

reply

Putrid? C'mon that's pretty strong

reply

They are poor.

From the original trailers, which were largely scenes from the pilot, I had high hopes for Kendra and the friend played by Lenny DiVito.

Kendra is woefully underused and when she is, she doesn't really do a lot. She can be funny but it's hard to see why she is attracted to Chale.

DiVito's character, I thought would have been more like an older version of Richie from KOQ, quick witted but slightly dim and a bit of an eye for the ladies. Yet he is the butt of jokes about living with his mother, more like Spence, yet if anything Mott seems to have more of a Spence like personality, yet he is the butt of jokes about being overworked by a large flock of kids and a wife that goes missing when she fancies it.

Don't get me started on Valentine. A truly pointless character. Sure, he had a fairly substantial role in the Choke episode, but that was pretty lame anyway.

I quite like Goody, he seems pretty level headed and has a bit more depth than the others, but not by much.

I'm not as down on Donna as many here seem to be, but I will admit she isn't great. Just not as terrible as is made out here. The two younger kids are fairly pointless really, but have had the odd funny line.

reply

The cast does need a shakeup. But I don't think it's that terrible. I just think they need to swap out a couple of Kevin's friends for new friends that are funnier. Also a good female friend for the wife or maybe a couple for them. I like Kendra and yes she should probably be used more. I don't mind the Chale guy that much. he can be funny. The other kids are a non factor. I don't think it would be wise to make them the focus of any episodes. Let them just be in the background. I have no problem with the wife. But on this board I am in the small minority in my opinions.

I just wanted it to be funny. I wasn't expecting King of Queens, I just wanted a funny sitcom to watch. This isn't it, unfortunately. Bad situations, bad comedy, bad writing, bad cast, bad chemistry, this show has it all!

I've given this show much longer than I normally would have just because of Kevin James, blind faith, and a masochistic streak. Just for fun, I looked up one of the creators Rock Reuben and saw that he was a writer on King of queens. When I saw the episodes he wrote, many of them were my least favorite ones of the series, including Manhattan Project, Inner Tube (worst ever), Raygin' Bulls, etc. His involvement may explain why I'm not finding it funny.

reply

This week's episode was horrendous.

One of the writers must have watched The Brady Bunch episode where Peter gets excited about being a hero. Instead of just ripping that off completely, they went with a terribly unfunny version of it.

reply

There were a couple of lines in this episode that were actually kind of funny. When the brothers were on that morning TV show and one of the hosts asked, "How does it feel to be sitting next to a hero?" and Kevin just sat there waiting for his brother to answer the question.

Okay, there was ONE funny line in this episode.

reply

Lol, okay that did get me too.

I liked the news anchor saying "I'm half black and half Asian, how am I not in a bigger market?"

That is surprisingly edgy for CBS. Surprised they let that joke get in.

reply

I agree about the "King of Queens" episode "Inner Tube", it's one of my least favorite epiodes too. But I think Rock Reuben also wrote some great episodes like "Flame Resistant" or "Tank Heaven".

The next "Kevin Can Wait" episode, "Unholy War", is written by Tony Sheehan, his first writing credit on the show. Sheehan wrote some of my favorite episodes on "King of Queens", for example "Lush Life", "Arthur, Spooner" or "Taste Buds".
The story sounds kinda funny, too. Hopefully it will be a good episode.
